Dwight does justice to the memory of Buck Owens. The singing and playing on this album is fantastic and captures the energy and vigor of early Yoakam work. A special mention to Eddie Perez for his great harmony vocals and amazing guitar work and to drummer Mitch Marine for keeping great time. Given that most of these songs were written in the 60's this album sounds so fresh. You can clearly hear that Dwight has put his heart and soul into this project and i don't think he has ever sounded so good. If you shell out your bucks on this you won't be let down.

I doubt whether any other country artist could do justice to Buck Owens's music anywhere near as well as Dwight Yoakam. After Tommy Collins, Wynn Stewart and Buck, Dwight has carried on the tradition of that fabulous, driving Bakersfield sound. And, of course, he and Buck had a country no. 1 with Streets Of Bakersfield in 1988.
It's hard to overstate the impact that Buck's music (along with that of George Jones) had on the emerging British country music scene in the late '60s, particularly in Liverpool, whose Hillsiders were probably the first over here to emulate that stunning pedal steel sound.
Nor how he stimulated the demand for more country music on record, the availability of which we so take for granted these days.
Many of Buck's best-known songs from the '60s are here, and most of these were top 5 country chart hits, including 8 number ones. I remember having Down On The Corner Of Love on a 45 that Buck recorded for a small independent label before he joined Capitol and started recording with the great Ken Nelson.
I particularly liked Dwight's versions of Down On The Corner Of Love, Above And Beyond and Under Your Spell Again, but really all the tracks are a treat. The reading of Close Up The Honky Tonks is a little different, and personally I prefer the standard country shuffle arrangement for this song, but all credit to Dwight for updating the Owens sound whilst maintaining that drive and verve.
Eddie Perez on guitar - love that Telecaster twang! - and harmony vocals, and Josh Grange on pedal steel deserve a special mention for their part in all this.
Some songs have stood the test of time better than others, and maybe one or two of Buck's songs have become over-familiar with the passing years, but they've certainly been given a new lease of life here.
And there are plenty more so far untouched - Under The Influence Of Love, Kickin' Our Hearts Around, Sweethearts In Heaven, House Down The Block, Hello Trouble... I could go on.
Yep, looks like there's enough for another CD.

A fitting tribute from a good friend. Dwight embraces the Bakersfield sound and runs through a fine selection of tunes. Buck would be proud. Buy and enjoy.
