Product Description

Review

'Phaidon's ground-breaking 55 series once again fulfils its self-set brief, by bringing us articulate and tempting introductions to the work of two photographers whose work is not very well-known in the UK.'
Simon James, Royal Photographic Society Journal

'In a brave attempt to match Penguin's success in finding a new market for fiction in the 1930s, Phaidon have put together boxed sets with themes including 'Experimental', 'Masters', '5 Great Documentary Photographers', and of course 'Pioneers' … Phaidon have come up with a great new concept for the photography book; and as a series of skilfully-produced, pocket-sized books […] they do attempt to address key moments in photographic history and innovation.'
PLUK (Photography in London and the UK)

Some amazing photos and the printing is excellent. Each photo has a facing page of text describing it and the format works well. I bought this as a present and it was a great success.

A great book detailing traditional building styles through history and accross the world. From the yurt to the stone shepherds' cottage, vernacular building shows that high-tech is not always the best solution, and that the construction methods that people have been evolving over thousands of years to suit their climate and local materials are actually very sophisticated. An insight into different methods of living in very different cultures. A very well written guide, easy to understand even if you have no previous knowledge, yet in-depth enough to interest at any level. With the beautiful photographs and very high standard of presentation that you would expect from Philadon. This is a lovely, fantastic quality book. Buy it!

Vernacular architecture has been discussed in many ways and forms. In this book, Paul Oliver, the issue of vernacular architecture is discussed in more detailed with comparison from many parts of the world in a wide range of time, in the past, present and also how it would be in the future. Perfect book for researcher and ethnographer in the study of vernacular architecture.
