5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful Dvorak steals up on you ... 30 Sep 2012
By schumann_bg TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I love this version of the Dvorak Cello Concerto - having recently acquired the Rostropovitch version with Ozawa on Erato, it struck me how much I like this one. Capucon's tone is softer and less edgy than Rostropovitch but it ultimately moves me more - it's a bit like comparing something ceremonious and grand with something private and intimate. For me the great test in this piece is in the high semiquaver accompaniment given to the cello in the first movement's development section; Capucon gets a sadness in there that is so wonderful, making so much out of a simple figuration. It is quite inexpressible, like a feeling of solitude ... but he pulls off a similar effect in the last movement, where the rise to the last note is achingly beautiful yet somehow veiled, as if it doesn't have full strength to draw on. The playing has vigour and elan when needed, but they are not the dominant note. If anything he plays out more in the Herbert, which sounds a bit like an Italian aria in the slow movement and does not have the same depth in any case, attractive though it is. The perfection of his Dvorak is haunting, a bit like a Vermeer painting, perhaps, in its subtlety, and fully bearing out the impression he makes in live performances, where his total immersion in the music is amazing. It's as if the music completely inhabits his frame. The orchestra under Paavo Jarvi provide excellent support, but it is the sound of that cello straining upwards with indescribable tenderness that lingers in the mind - was ever a sound as sweet, as pure, as this?

Dvorak and Herbert Cello Concertos: Hearing Gautier Capucon play the Victor Herbert and Antonin Dvorak Concertos with Paavo Jarvi conducting the Frankfort Radio Symphony was a refreshing and exciting experience.
Capucon plays the cello with a wonderful depth and richness that captivated me from the first notes to the last.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant and soulful aren't quite enough in the Dvorak 14 April 2009
By Santa Fe Listener - Published on Amazon.com

Gautier Capucon is the 27-year-old younger brother of violinist Renaud Capucon. Both have been taken under the wing of Martha Argerich -- they can be heard on several installments of her summer chamber music from Lugano (on EMI). They also attracted attention with some award-winning Brahms piano trios, quickly becoming pets of the Gramophone (considering that Gautier looks like the Jean-Pierre Leaud of the cello, there's no wonder).

Now Gautier steps out with "the" cello concerto, a masterpiece of Dvorak's that every famous virtuoso has put his stamp on. We are awash in fine cellists at the moment, both young and old, so I wondered if Capucon could make his version sound distinctive. When paired with his brother and Argerich, he's quite intense, although his tone is smaller and sweeter than one hears from the likes of a superstar like Rostropovich. Temperamentally, he's not fiery but displays an appealing soulfulness, which is put to good use in the slow movement of the Dvorak. But at the outset Capucon is given a sadly dragging tempo by Paavo Jarvi, who is ordinary othrwise, and the Frankfurt orchestra is neither plush nor virtuosic.

Even so, Capucon holds one's attention. He has musical instincts and draws you in with his phrasing more than his power. This isn't a commanding Dvorak concerto, more a poetic one. There's more energy and vitality in Victor Herbert's Cto. #2, a favorite among cellists since the composer, himself a cello virtuoso, writes so well for the instrument. I find it an engaging but pretty slight work and enjoyed Capucon's performance while it was going on.

In the end, this CD isn't all that compelling given such stiff competition, and I don't think Capucon yet establishes a strong artistic profile. but he's appealing, and one never knows.

I gave this to a friend who plays the cello and he really likes it. I have not heard it. Didn't want to open the covering before giving it as a present.
