These recordings date from 1955-57 and the remastering for SACD is another major success in a notable series. The original recording was made on three tracks and that has enabled the SACD version to be made using the three front speakers for the three tracks. There is real benefit from the more natural spread of sound thus achieved.

The earliest recording from 1955 is an absolutely sizzling performance of the Bartered Bride. This is the only performance that I have heard to match the Ancerl version with the Czech PO from about 1960, also now available in the Ancerl Gold series in remastered 24 bit sound. That too, showed off some wonderfully precise string playing and an exhilarating rhythmical control leading to a thrilling conclusion. Reiner has the advantage of better recording quality which belies the early date totally.

The Carnival Overture also is a thrilling performance, one of very few to come within miles of the Kertesz / LSO performance from about 1963. Once more the Reiner performance has the better sound regardless of age and once more the performance has the same rhythmical control and the accelerando towards the end brings about an exciting conclusion. Schwanda from 1956 is here considerably enhanced over the previous issue with the tendency towards shrillness completely controlled. Any remaining shrillness lies in the nature of the composition.

The 9th symphony dates from 1957 and now sounds sumptuous. There have been many recordings of this core repertoire symphony over the intervening fifty years, many of which must be counted as very fine indeed.

This is not the definitive performance of new world symphony, but it is filled with some woderful moments, vivid and deeply felt account. Early stereo recording displays amazing presence and depth of sound. Highly recommendable alongside Reiner's lavishing R.Strauss recordings!

Reiner gives warmly expressive & heartfelt account of the symphony without fuss. The slow movement is most beautifully played.
