Beecham at his best! 26 April 2010
By huwawa
Format:Audio CD
Two classic Beecham performances. The 'live' Sibelius is, even after all these years, something that makes the hairs stand on the back of the neck! Are there any conductors today who could produce such a barnstorming finale? The sheer physicality of it comes through in this classic recording. The Dvor'ák is characterised chiefly by the wonderful woodwind playing of the Royal Philhamonic of the time, and a finale that lifts the listener out of his/her seat! The latest re-mastering has given the venerable recordings an extra shine and all in all this is not a CD to be missed, no matter how many recordings you have of these works.

The Sibelius is extraordinary. It is a volcanic performance: you sense the magma ebbing and flowing beneath you and it regularly erupts! Wow - conductors don't make music like this these days. The Dvorak is less powerful but is still very intense. There is a greater cost for the excitement with the Dvorak - some poetry is lost - but neither of these performances tell you everything about these works. You won't always want to put on Beecham when you want to hear Sibelius 2 or Dvorak 8. There is no half way with these performances. But you just have to hear them!

The sound shows its age but is more than acceptable and the performances burn through any shortcomings.

Stunning Sibelius 7 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
The Sibelius is quite simply the best recording of a live orchestral performance I've ever heard. The only word I can think of to describe it is incandescent and it's impossible to recommend it too highly. I've known the recording for nearly 50 years (my late father had a much played LP of it) but I still get bowled over every time I listen to it. The historical sound quality and the inevitable audience noises are much less of an issue that you might expect, such is the quality and sheer force of Beecham's performance. The Dvorak, also live, is very fine but not in the same class.
