This Naxos CD, which can now be bought very inexpensively, contains Dvorák's Symphony No.1 in C minor, known as "The Bells of Zlonice". His first orchestral work, written in 1865 in order that the fledgling composer could enter a German music competition, it was then lost until it was rediscovered in a Leipzig bookshop in 1923. Throughout the piece, bells ring out, Dvorák achieving this effect by using dissonant overtones in the woodwinds. Some say that this Symphony is overscored and thick in its orchestration, but Gunzenhauser and the Slovak Philharmonic woodwinds are very clear and this is a beautiful, idiomatic, recording that benefits from an increase in volume as this opens up the generally good sound.

This disc also includes the first five of the ten "Legends", Op.59 - the others will be found on a subsequent Naxos disc Dvorák - Symphony No.2 - and here Gunzenhauser conducts the then Czecho-Slovak RSO. These are lovely little pieces, not that well-known, given fine performances in excellent sound.

This bargain CD is highly recommended as a good advocate for Dvorák's first attempt at a Symphony, complimentary to a Supraphon recording from Vaclav Neumann and the superior Czech Philharmonic Dvorák - Simphonies Nos 1 - 3 that I have.

I bought this to get to know Dvorak's First Symphony and it is fine for that. The performance of what is an early piece, not yet fully characteristic but still enjoyable and worth hearing, is good, and so on the whole is the recording, though, like that of the Second Symphony from the same label and performers, it lacks a little in impact and clarity by the highest standards. The five Legends which accompany the Symphony on this CD, much later works and much more Dvorakian, fare a little better and can be praised without reservation. This reliable CD can be bought very cheaply, and on that basis is a good buy.

By KaleHawkwood TOP 100 REVIEWER on 27 Sept. 2015
The first two symphonies by this most lovable and tuneful of composers are of a Mahlerian length, expansive, bursting with ideas, and the kind of music to play at full blast and just sit back and enjoy.
I especially like the Adagio (but then, I usually do) which is marked molto, and which American conductor and Naxos regular Gunzenhauser and his Bratislava orchestra play with great feeling.
This debut symphony is not exactly a masterpiece, but it contains so much beguiling music that any listener will surely find enough in it to cherish.
Sound and performance on this 1991 recording are more than adequate, though no more than that. In fact, the sound can seem thin at times, though the orchestra do their best to rise above any shortcomings in the facilities of the Radio Concert Hall in Bratislava But anyone buying this bargain will not feel at all short-changed.
The first five of the Legends are a lovely bonus (the other five are with Symphony #2 by the same forces).

Buy with confidence.
