This is a good version of some attractive and (in the case of the Symphony at least) little-known Dvorak. The Legends are absolutely lovely as music and are well played here. There are more characterful versions - by Sejna on Supraphon, for example, an old but still wonderful recording, musically the best I know - but this is fine. It was an odd decision by Naxos to split the Legends over two CDs - the first five are on Gunzenhauser's disc of the First Symphony - but so be it. If you want the first five from these artistes, both CDs can be bought for very little money, and are worth it. I bought this for the Symphony, which I did not know, and it is well worth getting to know. It's early Dvorak and not very characteristic, but it is attractive, tuneful and, in places, quite arresting. In the rather strange Scherzo with its slightly eerie 'static' opening, which recurs later, and the Finale there are some very Dvorakian sounds. This decent version will not let you down. Well played and well directed, in a good recording, it is enjoyable.

By Mr. Mark A. Meldon TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
This Naxos CD is, if anything, an even better performance than that given by these forces of Dvorák's Symphony No.1 and the first five "Legends", Op.59 Dvorák: Symphony No. 1; Legends Nos. 1-5; Gunzenhauser and his Czech and Slovak orchestras are idiomatic and well recorded but, as with quite a few relatively early Naxos orchestral recordings, a small increase in volume reaps rewards as the sound then opens out.

Symphony No.2 in B flat major, Op.4 was written at almost the same time as Dvorák's first symphony, although he did go back and revise it later on. It's a lovely work that deserves to be better-known, something that this CD will easily rectify. Pastoral in flavour, it's a fresh piece, influenced by Robert Schumann, particularly his C major Symphony No.2 Schumann : Symphonies Nos 2 & 3 'Rhenish' - Apex. This is one of the best of Stephen Gunzenhauser's Dvorák recordings.

The disc also includes the second five of the ten "Legends", Op.59, given excellent performances by the then Czecho-Slovak RSO.

I rate this as an excellent purchase and the CD comes highly recommended.
