18 of 19 people found the following review helpful By Michael Lee Davis on 24 Dec. 2011
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
These splendid recordings of the complete Dvorak piano trios are yet another brilliant re-release by Teldec on their own Apex label (much in the same style as Hyperion's excellent re-releases through Helios). From first to last, these very satisfying renditions - in terms of strikingly idiomatic interpretations and exceedingly adept musicianship - are every Dvorak chamber music lover's dream come true.
The trio Fortenay reigned supreme in this late-romantic repertoire during the late 1980s... and then inexplicably fell out of favor. With this charming re-release - along with their masterly recordings of the Smetana, Chopin, Brahms and Beethoven piano trios - the discerning classical music listener can once again marvel at the skill, warmth and amazing sympathy that the Fortenay had for these immortal classic miniatures. And at super-bargain price, the question of adding these shinning Czechoslovakian gems to your collection becomes obvious.
Very highly recommended!

A Disappointing Performance of the Dvorak Piano Trios 29 April 2013
By NRL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I'd looked forward to the Trio Fontenay's performance of the Dvorak Piano Trios, as I found their accompaniment of Wolfgang Holzmair's Beethoven folk song settings sensitive and movingly understated. However, I was disappointed with their Dvorak set. The performances seemed too analytical and detached. I compared them with what I still think is the benchmark reading - that by the Beaux Arts Trio. They catch subtle the mix of melancholy and frenzy in the "Dumky," which is based on Czech funeral music, far more effectively than the Fontenays. I'd strongly recommend skipping this set and going straight for the Beaux Arts on Philips.
