Like most of the unfavourable reviews I've read here, I'm also speaking as a genuine Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington fan. However I'm not such a fanatic that I'll just laugh at anything because it's Ricky saying it.
This was woeful stuff. While large parts of 'Animals' and 'Politics' had me in stitches and left me with watery eyes and snot running out of my nose, the best I could say for this is that I smiled a few times.
It was already going badly downhill with 'Fame', but now I'm actually embarrassed on Ricky's behalf. He's turned into David Brent welcoming the Swindon lot by trying to be funny, and just making a complete prat of himself in the process. He now comes across as a multi, multi, multi, multi millionaire who simply doesn't care enough any more since he doesn't need the money and he knows people will come to his gigs anyway because he's been on the telly and in movies a lot.
Where before his routines were always un-PC and a bit shocking - but also very clever and funny, now he seems to be simply going for pure shock value. I'm sure you'll think of the line about drink driving and the granny (a gag lifted almost verbatim from one of the Derek and Clive albums BTW) He's now trying to be a cross between a shock comedian and a clever one who analyses his own show, but rather than taking the best from both genres he's taking the worse of both, and you end with with poorly constructed sick jokes done for their own sake, and then a little knowing nod and wink as if that's somehow supposed to make it hilarious. All the cleverness is gone, and with it the humour.

That's about all I came away with in this totally laughter-free rant from Ricky Gervais. I used to be a big fan but this is about as funny as some drunken old fool down my local pub. In fact all it really did for me was reveal that Gervais is really not a very nice person at all.

Oh we've all heard him talk about how brilliant he is, and this was all said as part of a joke. And yes I used to laugh. Now though I'm starting to realise that this "parody" of being arrogant is really just an outlet for his real deap-seated arrogance. But if you want to fork out your hard-earned cash on a DVD telling you how brilliant and loaded the comedian is then knock yourself out.

And as to Susan Boyle. Of all the talentless Z-list celebrities out there why have a go at someone who can at least sing? And why pick on her because of her looks? This is where Gervais reveals his hypocrisy. He believes it's all right for us to make fun of fat people because "they did it to themselves" but wrong to make fun of gays because they were born that way. It's all down to choice according to Gervais. So what "choice" did Susan Boyle have? Did she choose to be a "mong" as Gervais describes her? And is it really acceptible for anyone, comedian or otherwise, to make fun of someone based on how they look? Personally I don't think it is.

But worse than that, far worse, Gervais commits the biggest sin of all in this DVD, the sin of being totally unfunny.

let me start of by saying that i am a massive fan of rickys i have gotten every dvd that he has put out but i wish i did not get this one because it was the same material just worded differently you know god and fat people its sort of a lazy attempt by ricky because he knows he will sell well so i dont think he cares really and he stole a joke from karl which i was kind off annoyed about so i would save your money on this one

Oh dear, this stand up must have been written the night before as it smacks of little planning and effort from the once brilliant Gervais. I've been concerned that the success would all go to his head and this lazy effort would prove that. I think he actually means it when he calls the audience the word you can't use (begins with c, 4 letters) if he thinks this is worth people spending time or money on. PLEASE don't waste your money on this, it's utter rubbish.

Firstly let me state that I have always been a big Gervais fan, from the days of XFM, then The Office, Extras and the Podcasts. I also enjoyed his other stand up shows, though they too recycled FAR too much of the content covered in the XFM shows and podcasts.

Basically, this show is poor throughout, it really seems as though Ricky couldn't really be bothered, and was only there because because he was under contract to do so. No energy, no clever jokes, no belly laughs, nothing. Without Steve or Karl by his side, Gervais is really shown up for what he is, a distinctly average comedian and rather poor stand up artist.

This show uses so much of the content from previous work, if you were a listener of the Ricky Gervais show on XFM, or the podcasts, you will have already heard 90% of the things he covers in this show, infact, many of the jokes used were made by Karl Pilkington and Steve in the old radio and podcast shows, not Ricky. The audience themselves sound bored for long periods, particually when Gervais goes on his extremely tedious rants on fat people and religion, which we have all heard before. Infact, it seems as though he has just gone for 'shock' value in this show (i.e the granny joke) instead of well thought out jokes and observations.

To sum up, If you have heard the podcasts or XFM shows, you have heard this stand-up, and heard better versions of all the jokes in it. Far too much re-used material, far too many long rants, and far too much lazy and arrogant writing by a man whose ego has perhaps gone out of control.

I give this show 1 star simply because its a mammoth ('Man-moth?'...lol...some of you will get that) let down. Ricky, quit the stand up game and get back into TV with Steve, its what you are good at.
