5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY 16 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Duty Free belongs in the old school of British comedy. This show topped the reatings when first shown in 1984 and was repeated pretty often during the mid 80`s. The 3 dvds..disc 1 has the first series set during the first week. The acting is exceptional, Keith Barron is excellant as David, recently made redundant and living a lie with Linda the well to do English woman married to Robert who doesn`t seem to notice her. The revelation is Gwen Taylor as Amy who lights up the screen in all her scenes and gets the best lines. (TO A BULLFIGHTER-"YOU`RE JUST A HITMAN FOR FREY BENTOS")
Gwen Taylors acting as she witnesses losing her husband to Linda takes this above most other comedy performances. From the same writer as `Rising Damp, the 2nd series on disc 2 features the second week and is just as funny. Whilst disc 3 features the return the year after and the first two episode are classic British farce. There is also the episode featuring Judith Charmers which is brilliant. Also on disc 3 is the 1986 special `A DUTY FREE CHRISTMAS` which works well on film and without an audience you see the chemistry between the 4 stars...not forgetting Carlos the waiter. Roberts remarks about Germans and references to Pasatas may date this..after all it`s 20 years since series 1 but it is still classic, funny British comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sorely Underated British Comedy Classic 19 April 2010
This 3 disc set collects all 22 episodes of this classic British sitcom, that frequently topped the ratings during its run between 1984-86; infact it scored consistently huge ratings throughout. Time seems to have eclipsed its success, often being (questionably) over-looked, but without a doubt, Duty Free is a true classic and certainly one of the best and most well-written sitcoms of its time. This excellent DVD collection will be sure to remind you why.

Written by Eric Chappell and Jean Warr, Duty Free is set at the San Remo hotel in sunny, glorious Spain (well, actually it was all filmed at Yorkshire TV studio's, though the wonderful 1986 Christmas special was actually filmed at the Costa Del Sol), following two couples holidaying there. David Pearce (Keith Barron) had been made redundant after 20 years of loyal service as a draughtsmen. Leaving a bitter taste in his mouth David decides to blow all his money on a fortnights 'package holiday' in Spain, taking his down-to-earth, witty wife Amy (Gwen Taylor) with him. David is a bit of a dreamer, while Amy is much more of a realist, with both feet firmly planted on the ground. Amy is delighted, though, to be in Spain with her husband, seeing it as a second honeymoon. However upon their arrival they meet another couple, the glamorous and beautiful Linda (Joanna Van Gyseghem) and stuffy, pompous and slightly eccentric Robert Cochran (Neil Stacy). A mutual attraction between David and Linda is apparent and whilst Robert remains ever-oblivious, Amy is determined to keep hold of her man. David becomes (annoyingly) pretentious and goes out of his way to impress the sophisticated Linda, much to Amy's annoyance. Amy's sharp, witty put-down's to David are delivered superbly by the loveable Gwen Taylor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 20 Dec 2008
Everyone involved with Duty Free deserves credit. We have to start with writers Eric Chappell and his secretary Jean Warr. The regular cast - Keith Barron, Gwen Taylor, Joanna Van Gyseghem, Neil Stacy and Carlos Douglas were beyond brilliant. I got the feeling they each added their own thing to make a funny script even funnier.

*** Behind the scenes spoiler about the Christmas episode ***
Please don't read this until you've seen the episode.

A Duty Free Christmas was mostly filmed at an actual hotel in Spain. This was because some Duty Free fans thought the regular hotel actually existed and they felt let down to find the limit of its existence was a set at Yorkshire TV studios. The hotel (Don Carlos) still exists but was refurbished around the year 2000.

Ok so now onto the spoiler. Gwen Taylor couldn't fly out to Spain due to other commitments so all her scenes were filmed in and near a particular London hotel. Huge credit to the person in charge of continuity. So many things to take into consideration. Gwen's presence in Spain was so convincing. Look closely at the windows in the lobby scenes though and you'll see what I mean. The windows were carefully masked. Nevertheless it still worked. It's worth remembering that the cast didn't want to do the Christmas special at first. Since the special wasn't shown in front of a live studio audience prior to release there was no laughter track.

As a huge fan though I'm extremely grateful that Duty Free (including the special) was made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless comedy 21 Feb 2013

Another one of those immortalised classic comedy series. One that you will watch over and over. Brilliant performances by all the major cast. Classic example of a working class man keeping his pride and pretending that he is as good as the more affluent, instead of accepting that he has been made redundant and is down on his luck, Much to the cost of his long suffering wife, who just wants to accept life as it is.. Excellent value.
