This 1986 Christmas special of the smash hit comedy of the 1980's (that knocked both Coronation Street and EastEnders off the top of the ratings on numerous occasions) is undoubtedly the very best episode ever made out of the previous 20 episodes already made (series 1 - 1984 series 2 - 1985 series 3 - 1986). Eric Chappell and Jean Warr (the successful writing team behind another classic gem, Rising Damp) seem to go that little bit further with this edition. Undoubtedly the fact that they filmed it for real in Spain probably added to its almost realistic undertone. However many of the situations David, Amy, Linda and Robert find themselves in is classic British sitcom style humour. Many claim that Keith Barron was the sole star of this show. I beg to differ! Down-to-earth Gwen Taylor steals the entire show with her quick, witty humour and her timing is immpeccable. There is such warmth and depth displayed with her character that its impossible not to like her or feel sympathy for her when David blatantly flirts openly with the object of his fantasies - the pretentious Linda.
Great christmas fun and with all the destruction going on in the world at the moment its so refreshing to watch a nice, fun, innocent comedy like this. The ending is great - just take a look at the look on Gwen Taylors face when she finally catches David and Linda who were just about to have a rendezvous in a hotel room David had rented for the night. Classic stuff! This also concluded the series once and for all as there were no more episodes made after this. This wonderful show finished with a bang!
