Amazing story, 14 Mar 2005
By John Kramer "John" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: By Duty Bound: Survival and Redemption in a Time of War (Hardcover)
I have no idea what this guy Boddy who reviewed the book is talking about. He says the air went out of the story after the two guys are rescued. Well, duh! The story ends after they're rescued. Idiot!
Despite what he says, this is a remarkable story. The best true story I have ever read or heard about. It reminds me of a movie from the early 1960s starring Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis called "The Defiant Ones." The two guys, one black and one white, are chained together and have to learn how to overcome their hate so that they can survive.
This story has the advantage of being true. A black man raised in Jim Crow Mississippi makes his dreams come true, and doesn't let anything get in his way. It is inspiring, uplifting, and insightful. I wish I could read it again for the first time, but I will remember it always.

Best Book I've Read On The Wars Within A War - A Must Read!, 1 May 2005
By A. Maynard "May" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: By Duty Bound: Survival and Redemption in a Time of War (Hardcover)
This book goes far beyond the norm in placing the reader directly into the 1940-50s settings of segregrated Mississippi, a good-old-boy military, and the Vietnam Jungle floor. Ezell and Joel did it so that even the uneducated on that matters will not desire this book to end. Amid a personal story are the facts of Mississippi's struggle to right itself and come into the 20th century. Noted are the information on the Emmet Till tragedy as well as other tragedies of that era. But even more than that, By Duty Bound reveals how two very different individuals, one white and one black, not only learn to survive together.......but come to a special kind of respect....if not love....for one another. One will be much richer by reading this book.

And They Said It Could not be done., 24 April 2005
By D. A. Edwards - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: By Duty Bound: Survival and Redemption in a Time of War (Hardcover)
This is a marvelous book. It is a personal view of how it was to be raised black in the south,(Mississippi, Alabama) having difficult experiences as a child and teenager then taking those negative experiences and molding them into a stepping stone to accomplish your goals. Ezell Ware did this in his personal experiences in Viet Nam with a man which had to learn to depend on a black man, one which society labled less than a man. Ezell Ware used his experiences in life to accomplish a long time goal of becoming a General in the Military. I recommend this book to anyone who has dreams and have been told that they can not be acheived. This is an excellent book to share with the youth of today. As a mother I am going to insist that my children read this novel. It will allow you to take a personal look at yourself.
