Amazon.co.uk Review

Full Circle is an affable 1994 documentary of Dusty Springfield’s career, from her earliest home tape recordings, through the earnest, rough-hewn pop folk of the Springfields (source of her stage name), into the swinging 60s, then right up to the 1990s when her inclusion in Quentin Tarantino's savvy '60s soundscape to Pulp Fiction and a high-profile cameo on a Pet Shop Boys single helped resuscitate critical acclaim for her soulful yet velvety delivery.

A bumper crop of vintage British television clips from her appearances on her own shows will offer retro-surfers a delirious array of wigs, eyelashes and couture that may be cause enough for viewing. Yet Springfield's vocal poise and superb taste in songs is borne out on a more serious level by interviews with Martha Reeves (for whom she was an honorary Vandella and whose best early Motown sides are triumphantly covered in vintage Springfield clips), Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello, Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant and producer Jerry Wexler.

Giving the hour-long documentary an irreverent spin are interviewers Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, who lampoon celebrity worship and reverent pop biographies. Music fans should be forewarned that the bulk of performances are from live television performances, suffering the lo-fi limitations of their source. But Dusty herself emerges as a winning, clear-eyed presence, making this a worthy valedictory. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

Format:VHS Tape
This is a very good review of Dusty Springfield's singing career with loads of original television footage. Based on the TV programme interview with Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French which took a very jocular approach to the Queen of Soul. The primary reason that one should buy this is for the full version of the excerpts shown originally on television. Dusty singing Martha Reeves and the Vandellas Dancin in the streets, Nowhere to run and Heatwave. Unfortunately, some of the original interviews have been truncated to allow space for the full perfomances. It should be also noted that no mention was made of the 15 years gap when Miss Springfield vanished from circulation. Definitely a must for the Dusty Springfield fan

This video is definitely worth seeing, especially for the older material. Dusty is at her best throughout, (but a little editing might have helped a few rambling moments.) Otherwise, it is a brilliant and affectionate look at one of pop's true artists. French & Saunders provide the usual amount of laughs.

What a disappointment! 27 July 2009

Format:DVD
I bought this DVD thinking it would be exactly the same as the original documentary I saw on television; but this DVD had a lot of the interesting commentary cut out - I reached the end and thought, "hold on, did I nod off and miss something without realising?!" - I back tracked and then realised that it wasn't that I hadn't been paying attention, most of the commentary had actually been cut down to a few words! Why bother putting this out at all in this case?! I'm so disappionted, and seriously considering throwing it out, not worth keeping as it is! To the people responsible, all I can say is ... GRRR!!
