Can it be fourteen years since Connoisseur Records released A Love Like Yours, a 19 track compilation of songs covered by Dusty? That has been the most-played CD in my house. Now we have a second compilation of 24 tracks which were also covered by Dusty. And this one is, I suspect, going to be played heavily too.
Some songs are very well known. Some are classics. Some date back to the wonderful sixties. Some are effervescent creations from well-known composers.
In every case, Dusty made her version something special. It doesn't necessarily mean that Dusty's covers were better, just different and, in every case, threw the spotlight on some incredible music.
I'm sure everybody will have their own favourites from this incredible selection, be they Brill Building or Motown or Soul classics. What impresses me most are the lesser known tracks. One of the many highlights of this remarkable CD, is the five minutes-plus Love Me By Name, a haunting ballad from a mature Lesley Gore released in 1976. I'd forgotten how beautiful this song is.
With liner notes from music experts Malcolm Baumgart and Mick Patrick, this is yet another essential purchase from those good folk at Ace Records,
