Product Description

The previous volumes in Ace Heard Them Here First series focused on Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, the Ramones and the New York Dolls. This edition features the original versions of numbers recorded by Dusty Springfield, the UK's premier female vocalist of the 1960s. Dusty's expertise as an interpretive singer prevented her from being viewed as a cover artist and allowed her the luxury of recording the songs of her favourite American performers and writers. The selection spans Marie Knight's Nothing In The World', a super song Dusty recorded on her first LP, through to K.T. Oslin's 'Where Is A Woman To Go', a highlight of Dusty's swansong album. The Marie Knight track makes its CD debut here, along with 'Love Me By Name' by Lesley Gore, 'Packin' Up' by Margie Hendrix and Carla Thomas' 'Every Ounce Of Strength'. Reflecting Dusty's impeccable taste in music, this Ace CD also includes songs by her preferred songwriting teams Goffin & King and Bacharach & David and several great examples from the Motown catalogue. Compilation and notes by Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality! 30 Jan 2014

Yet another great compilation (70.36mins long)in this series from 'Ace' records. This is the 5th outing in the artist vein (and the 8th - if you include the original 3). The first thing to say is Dusty was a huge talent with a tremendous voice, secondly she had impeccable taste in covering American Soul music. Here are 24 of those wonderful examples, most of them I have already (except a few) but it's great to have them all on one compilation. Sadly my favourite track covered by Dusty isn't included 'I just don't know what to do with myself' by the ever great Tommy Hunt, but that aside it's a fine selection - from various Motown greats , and other great soul artists such as Baby Washington, Carla Thomas and Garner Mimms. Overall, it's a stylish package (rather like the lady herself) it comes with a fantastic 20 page booklet that's packed with label scans, pics and great liner notes from Mick Patrick. The sound quality is fantastic, there are 9 Mono tracks and the rest are in Stereo. A great listen and a great read. 9/10. Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dusty Had Immaculate Taste 7 Feb 2014
Judging by the quality and quantity of songs Dusty Springfield chose to cover, she had immaculate taste.

Can it be fourteen years since Connoisseur Records released A Love Like Yours, a 19 track compilation of songs covered by Dusty? That has been the most-played CD in my house. Now we have a second compilation of 24 tracks which were also covered by Dusty. And this one is, I suspect, going to be played heavily too.

Some songs are very well known. Some are classics. Some date back to the wonderful sixties. Some are effervescent creations from well-known composers.

In every case, Dusty made her version something special. It doesn't necessarily mean that Dusty's covers were better, just different and, in every case, threw the spotlight on some incredible music.

I'm sure everybody will have their own favourites from this incredible selection, be they Brill Building or Motown or Soul classics. What impresses me most are the lesser known tracks. One of the many highlights of this remarkable CD, is the five minutes-plus Love Me By Name, a haunting ballad from a mature Lesley Gore released in 1976. I'd forgotten how beautiful this song is.

With liner notes from music experts Malcolm Baumgart and Mick Patrick, this is yet another essential purchase from those good folk at Ace Records,

This is not the first CD of songs covered beautifully by Dusty. She obviously had a huge record collection & had the talent to cover these songs without radically changing the original material. As well as the more obvious Motown songs like The Velvelettes ( Needle in a haystack ) we are treated to White singers who werent very successful in Europe or the UK -like Evie Sands & Lesley Gore. In many cases Dustys versions surpass the originals-this will be played for years to come-excellent.

I bought this as I had always been curious about the original versions of some of Dusty's classics. What the album has proven is how good Dusty was at making songs better, and her own. Only a few songs match or could be considered slightly better than Dusty's "covers." I liked "Magic Garden" by Fifth Dimension, "Another Night," by Dionne Warwick, "Can I Get a Witness," Marvin Gaye and "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," by the Miracles but this album sets out to and proves how much better Dusty was than most.
