3.0 out of 5 stars Still one of their best, 12 Aug 2009
By Julian Stevens (BRISTOL, UK United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was originally issued in 1987 on the MCA Master Series label at a time when several of the major labels were waking up to the commercial possibilities of new jazz and New Age. Red Dust was the first Acoustic Alchemy album to feature the highly successful acoustic guitar duo of Greg Carmichael and the now late Nick Webb (who died of cancer, poor fellow). As with several AA albums, this one was recorded in West Germany by Klaus Genuit (except for just one track recorded in London by John Brand) and produced by John Parsons (who also played guitar here and there). Many of the support musicians are of continental origin, such as Bert Smaak (an old buddy of Jan Akkerman I believe) on drums, Rainer Bruninghaus on keyboards and Werner Kopal on bass.

It's a very crisp and lively affair, all instrumental and full of life and fresh inspiration from the opening track Mr Chow which, as its title suggests, has a slightly oriental tang to it. After that, the remaining eight tracks are of a decidedly more western flavour, with tight, catchy melodies and first class, well polished playing from all concerned. Messrs Webb & Carmichael either wrote or co-wrote all of them. As Nick Webb wrote in the liner notes "The material on the album represents a wide variety of styles ~ rock, jazz, flamenco, folk and almost everything in between" which is pretty accurate.

Though some may feel that some of the band's later albums were better still, Red Dust & Spanish Lace remains in some ways unrivalled for its sheer verve and freshness. Although after all these years, skilled digital remastering might well improve things even further (maybe this issue with a new cover pic is exactly that), this one was where it all started and remains well worth seeking out. I'm surprised to be the first to post a review of it.
