Camel's finest and a masterpiece of modern rock,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dust & Dreams (Audio CD)
This is an astounding album: after a 7 year gap of leagl frustrations Andrew latimer returned with his greatest work, a sad yet uplifting album which is inspired by Steinbeck's magnificent "The Grapes of Wrath".The instrumentals are all superb, and the four vocal tracks are brilliant, too, with probably the best vocals Andrew has ever produced, along with Susan Hoover's finest lyrics. This album could have gone multi-platinum, if only people had heard it. Anyone who likes intelligent, sophisticated and moving rock should try it.

Camel - The Best of All,
By MR P ALLAN (Edinburgh United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dust & Dreams (Audio CD)
This album is most certainly the band's greatest creation. A wonderful mixture of symphonic and progressive themes, tailored with excellent musicianship of the highest calibre. Andrew Latimer's vocals are his best yet and his guitar playing is simply breathtaking. The concept is loosely based on Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" and has been loving constructed around the main themes of the book. This album is up there with Marillion (Brave), the Floyd (the Wall), Genesis (Selling England), and YES (Tales/Relayer/Close to the Edge). I thoroughly recommend this album - Buy it, listen to it, love it - You will not be disappointed.

What a great comeback,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dust & Dreams (Audio CD)
I accidentally discovered this in the mid 90s - a comeback record by my favourite group (that disappeared in 1984) that I didn't know had been released. Best of all is that it's brilliant, definitely Camel's best CD, and if you know "Nude", "Stationary Traveller", "Moonmadness", etc, then that is quite an achievement. It's hard to describe the Camel sound. Maybe a more emotional version of Pink Floyd, with more instrumentals. In saying that, the songs on this are magnificent, too. Some people have compared the music to Dire Straits - no comparison, Camel wins hands down. This is inspired by Steinbeck's classic, moving novel "The Grapes of Wrath" and the music does justice to its inspiration. Andrew Latimer may be the greatest guitarist in the world, he's certainly the best guitarist no-one's ever heard of. The album features Camel veterans Colin Bass (on, coincidentally, bass guitar), Ton Scherpenzeel on keyboards and Paul Burgess on drums, with excellent guest vocalists Mae MacKenna and David Paton sharing the singing with Latimer himself. Even the cover art is wonderful. Camel is possibly the only one of the great progressive rock bands from the 70s that is surpassing the achievements of that decade now.
