Product Description

CD Description

Real name Aisha Devi Enz, Kate Wax is an electronic producer and singer songwriter who first made a splash back in 2005 with the album Reflections of the Dark Heat on Mental Groove Records. Dust Collision is her first proper artist album since then, and shows her charting familiar territory: oblique lyrics, avant-garde production styles and a generally haunting mood. According to a press release, it takes its name from experiments taking place at Switzerland's Large Hadron Collider, where her grandfather once worked. Wax composed the album at her home in Geneva, then mixed it with Border Community boss James Holden at his studio in London.

By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Kate Wax is the pseudonym of Aisha Devi Enz, a Swiss/Tibetan producer
and composer of electronic music and 'Dust Collection' is her second album
(please do listen to her 2007 debut 'The Dark Collection' too). Ms Wax is
onto something here! The twelve tracks in this collection, in many senses,
deserve the term "experimental". One has the sense of an artist carefully
exploring both the expressive potential of her own voice and of stretching
the boundaries of machine-made music in an idiosyncratic and stirring way.
Her distinctive blend of rhythm and challenging but highly evocative sonic
textures is a brave and bold new contribution to an ever-burgeoning genre.

Ms Wax's voice is a strange and wonderful instrument. Sometimes harsh,
sometimes tender, she manages to keep us continually on our toes and
defying expectations about what might happen next. There is a surprise
around every corner. Whether in the otherworldly harmonies of the bleak
and haunting 'Human Twin'; the edgy grunt and grind of 'Archetype'; the
dance-friendly funky mayhem of 'Echoes and The Light', with its eighties-
tinged juddering synth ostinatos, or the unnerving night sounds and tribal
percussion of 'Holy Beast', her well-crafted arrangements hold us in thrall.

Opening track 'I Knit You' deserves a special mention for its brutal
simplicity; contrasting an ethereally breathy vocal performance with
a single blistering staccato synth line building to a cataclysmic coda.
So too the nightmarish final number 'Les Djinns' which creates a disturbing
but curiously uplifting landscape from its complex rhythmic and melodic
components. A raging animal, loose in the world and bent on destruction!

A thrilling, highly original roller-coaster of an album.

Heartily Recommended.

Leaves me uneasy 12 Dec 2011
By bowery boy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Rarely do I come across a disc that immediately captivates and unnerves me at the same time. Such is the case with Kate Wax's Dust Collision, a dark and claustrophobic midtempo movement of electronica that simultaneously defies being categorized as downtempo electronica.

Upon first listen, the CD reminds me of a darker, mellower, less dancefloor friendly version of Lida Husik's Faith In Space (even down to the similar CD covers) Yet the combination of Wax's vocals (which sounds very similar to that gal from The Knife) and subtle hints of guitar and piano take Dust Collision into a darker place.

Each track utilizes the same leisurely midtempo pace. Various and sundry electronics often clash with electric guitar and piano in the background while Wax's eerie and haunting voice, sometimes digitally manipulated, takes center stage.

One of the best tracks is Maze Rider when the break finds Wax bursting into an agressive chorus (or as agressive as possible on such a mellow release) as if she momentarily forgets where she is or that the song is suppose to be mellow.

Another great track is the deceptively simple opener I Knit You composed of nothing more than a Morodor-esque synth and Wax's vocals.

The title track is the closest thing to a dance number you'll find here with a great vocal sample that sets up the rhythm.

Dust Collision is a dark and intense listen full of layered nuances. Perfect for a lazy rainy Sunday morning. It will leave you exhaused after its done but somehow compelled to take the dark journey again.

One of best releases I've heard in 2011.
