Product Description

CD Description

Durango is a career-defining release from the ever popular Coal Porters who are taking their Bluegrass inspired oeuvre to even wider horizons. This enhanced CD includes a mini documentary about the band.

The album was produced by the legendary Ed Stasium, (Ramones, Phil Spector, Gladys Knight, Mick Jagger, Jeff Healey) and recorded in Colorado USA April 2008 via the 'Basement Tapes' style with the musicians playing live and the band all looking at each other as they played...not a soul separated by glass or partitions.

Guest artists on the record are Peter Rowan, who sang and played guitar on his song "Moonlight Midnight", and Tim O'Brien who played mandolin on "Roadkill Breakdown".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic new release from The Coal Porters 7 Mar 2010
By Leza H
Format:Audio CD
Even if you don't think you're a fan of this genre of music, buy this album anyway - I guarantee it will uplift you. If you're already a bluegrass fan - then Durango should be in your collection already. Sid Griffin has combined his alt country roots from his old and achingly hip band The Long Ryders with the blue grass/folk influences of his heroes. The talent on Durango is envious and impressive; I never knew I liked fiddle playing til I heard Carly Frey who must have blisters on her fingers - amazing to listen to even more incredible when you see her play live with The Coal Porters. You think that duelling banjo scene from the movie Deliverance is cool? Then listen to Dick Smith pick up a storm on Durango. Combined with the rest of the band's talent, amazing guitar and mandolin playing, rousing vocals and Ed Stasium on production (Ramones, Smithereens, Belinda Carlisle, Jeff Healey Band) - you have a fantastic album which will have you singing long in to the night and left aching for more. My musical tastes range from Iggy and the Stooges to Radiohead and after discovering The Coal Porters I'm going hunting for more blue grass references. If you get the chance to go see the band live - you will be hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic new album 16 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan of the Coal Porters for some time now and this album is a fantastic addition to their already outstanding catalogue. Drawing on a range of musical influences and expertly combining them into a whole new sound, Durango is a witty, poignant, deep and soulful piece of work in which the exemplary talents of each of the CPs come together seamlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another smashing success for Sid Griffin and Co. 30 April 2011

One more album to add to the 7 already out there by the Coal Porters. An excellent and well produced collection of bluegrass from a native Kentuckian, Sid Griffin. Formerly the leader of The Long Ryders, he has blazed a trail of successful musical enterprises from groups to writer / author of several books on Bob Dylan. Relocating to England he has worked with the best bluegrass musicians that the country has to offer. It should not be surprising to anyone that bluegrass is well and alive in England since most bluegrass came out of English, Scottish and Irish folk songs that were brought to America by immigrants in the 1800's and sung in the hills of Tennesee, Kentucky and Viginia where many of those immigrants chose to settle. For those who like good bluegrass music, I highly recommend this selection and that you look into others out there by Sid and company. Once again, another fine effort by The Coal Porters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm and varied modern bluegrass 22 April 2010
By G. Alexander - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album is beautifully recorded -- basically live to the mixing board in the studio without acoustic dividers between the musicians and singers -- and the music making (in all aspects - singing, instrumental facility and arrangements) is simply top notch. I thought in error that the songs would be a mixture of Americana genres (folk, country-folk, weird old American, etc) but the album (for the greater part) is a bluegrass album (albeit done superbly) which I like in small doses but not for an entire album. If you do enjoy bluegrass, however, I guarantee that you will savor, if not love unabashedly, this CD and give it repeated spins.
