3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Strange and Too Confusing 4 Dec 2009
By E. Smith TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
This seems to generate a range of review ratings, and I'm going with the average so-so ones. I knew it was going to be a bit of a romantic spy affair, and whilst it reminded me a bit of Charade for some reason, I found it too confusing to be very enjoyable. I also wasn't keen on the jumping backwards and forwards in time to tell the story, as it simply wasn't clear enough to me what the heck was going on.

There are some very impressive high-up views of New York, but apart from that I wasn't too impressed by the blu-ray quality. It was good enough, but not great.

I wanted to like this film, but having seen it I don't think I'd bother again. I much preferred Entrapment, which is in a similar vein.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique thriller which is a pleasant surprise 29 Aug 2009
Format:Blu-ray
Although the media reviews have been generally favourable, this film has received some criticism, mostly due to its convoluted plot and what many people perceive to be an unsatisfactory ending. I also think the first 15 minutes or so of the film are a little weak, there is an unconvincing slow-mo of the two main protagonists scuffling at an airport, and the first of many "Thomas Crown" style split screens accompanied by some hip jazz - this all looks a little contrived, as if the director is trying to jump on the Quentin Tarantino / Guy Ritchie bandwagon ten years too late.

However, by the time the credits roll I was totally satisfied by this witty and stylish thriller. Although the plot is cryptic and is told out of sequence, Pulp Fiction style (Tarantino again), you were still given enough breadcrumbs to understand what was going on, with the added bonus that the film will stand repeated viewings when more details may be picked up. The script in particular is a highlight, very witty and highly amusing at places, I found myself hanging on every word. Performances by all the cast are top notch, Owen and Roberts work very well together, although Julia isn't carrying quite the level of glamour we normally associate with her here (sorry, but she is playing a romantic lead). Owen appears to be going from strength to strength, I've not seen him in bad film yet (thank goodness he didn't sign-up for Bond). As for the ending, well, in my opinion it was excellent; very brave and totally unexpected, and also looking a little like the door is being left open for a sequel (although I doubt very much we'll see one).

As for the presentation on Blu-Ray, well I thought the image quality was pretty average for a modern release (nothing wrong with that, I just found it unremarkable), although colours are vibrant, and the glamorous locations do look good. Sound quality is strong though, with a good choice of soundtracks (there is also a huge choice of subtitles).

3.0 out of 5 stars Light, amusing in parts 10 April 2009
By Roman Clodia TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
This is a fun film, lightly amusing in parts, but ultimately quite slight. Others have reviewed the plot, such as it is, so I won't repeat that. Julia Roberts is excellent as the ex-CIA operative, the usually wonderful Clive Owen was, however, less comfortable as the ex-MI5 man. Their bickering yet passionate relationship didn't light any sparks on screen, and really that's what this kind of film relies on. However there were some clever plot twists and Tom Wilkonson and Paul Giametti were superb in their manic portrayals as obsessively warring company executives. If you're looking for light entertainment then this will pass a couple of hours quite happily but don't expect anything more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible and mediocre 11 Feb 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Once again we have the usual modern faults - overemphasised background noise/sound effects and actors mumbling their lines so you cant hear what they say. If you turn the volume up to hear the dialogue the next offering of background noise and sound effects blasts you off your seat. again, it appears (a personal opinion only) that the dialogue sound track has been Dolby encoded which means that the sibilants in speech are muffled, making the dialogue difficult to hear.
If anyone can follow the story in this film they have my utter admiration - we are bombarded with constant flashbacks - 3 months ago, 2 weeks ago, one week ago etc. etc. This numerous flashback technique seems to be the latest Hollywood directorial fad; it should be discouraged. Finally, like all modern films, all the photography is very low key - all the scenes appear so dark.
As far as I can remember, on this disc we are spared the usual "You wouldnt steal a handbag" etc sequence - the one you cant fast forward, but I wouldnt swear to it. There also does not appear to be a Maltesers commercial break which is starting to occur in modern DVDs.(Young Victoria for example).

3.0 out of 5 stars I Spy 17 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
There's no tidy timeline in this industrial espionage romantic romp. Therefore keeping up with the plot requires a lot of attention. Especially for men. Just when you think you know what's happened, is happening and is about to happen, we get dragged into a 'relationship' scene which deactivates your frontal lobe.

Roberts seems to have a gob on throughout most of the film, although Owen seems to be enjoying himself. Meanwhile Giamatti is superb. The music is catchy in that Oceans 11 kind of way and the split screens work perfectly well for this kind of caper.

I enjoyed it, despite the odd distraction. So it seems did my wife, although she seemed to show an inordinate amount of interest in Clive Owen's bare chest. Hmm.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, unnecessariliy compl 29 Nov 2009
Format:DVD
I generally don't mind a complicated plot or multiple characters in a movie, usually it keeps me interested. But I don't like complexity just for the sake of it and this movie was just unnecessarily complex. As a result it bored me intensely. The two lead characters appear to be some kind of special agents and working for competing firms, but I never really figured it out - and really I had no desire to figure it out. The jumping back and forward from present time to the past was also another layer of distraction.
As well as there being no chemistry at all between the two lead characters, and neither of them were looking particularly attractive - this movie has nothing going for it.
