Book Description

28 Mar 2010
A leading detective reveals the truth behind the headlines of some of Northern Ireland s most violent crimes. Alan Simpson was the senior investigating officer in the case of the controversial killing of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane. As he writes here, from the outset there was suspicion of security forces collusion in the murder. He reveals for the first time the dramatic secrets behind the kidnapping and murder of Thomas Niedermayer, German Consul to Northern Ireland and manager of the Grundig factory. He reveals, too, the extraordinary degree of collusion between republican and loyalist paramilitaries. This is a unique insight into the murkiest aspects of policing, from an author who was at the heart of events.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ulster conflict 17 May 2010
By Mike
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
An amazing book and should be read by everyone with an interest in the troubles in Ulster.

It is an unflinching view of what really happened during this 30 year conflict written by a man at the centre of the investigations into most of the appalling deeds undertaken in the name of patriotism.

It also highlights the professionialism of the officers of a provincial, originally under-resourced, police force in combatting terrorism of a scale never encountered in this country before.

The human toll on these men and women is too often overlooked and forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars The truth will out 5 Aug 2011

Into the Dark Alan Simpson the author of this book was my Detective Superintendent in the Royal Ulster Constabulary Criminal Investigation Department. I served under this mans command from January 1989 until his retirement from the Police service in 1994. Alan was a formidable detective and an officer who by his example and his conduct brought out the very best in his staff. Not one to stand on ceremony his easy manner ensured absolute loyalty from his subordinates. He was not just a brilliant and very able detective. He was also a man who expected and indeed benefited from the work of his teams of personally selected detectives of which I was very proud to have his faith.

Alans book merely touches upon his achievements. His personal drive and his initiatives resulted in the bringing to book of many of that eras most deadly criminals and terrorists. He details many of his successes but even then his narrative falls short of explaining why he was so revered as a leader. Alan took pains to encourage all of his staff and could sit down and mix with the most junior CID officers. I took pains to explain in my book "Into the Dark" how spineless our senior officers were when it came to dealing with or confronting those members of the the RUC Special Branch who deliberately blocked legitimate CID investigations when those investigations centred on SB agents.

Alan was not spineless. He was one of those exceptional senior CID officers who put himself in harms way to frustrate such SB misconduct. Unfortunately we lost him to a well deserved early retirement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 12 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent read of what goes on, not only in cops' heads, but their world. Simpson has given us a little peek into the dirty dealings and dirty deeds carried out by those sworn to protect us. It makes for very uncomfortable reading, but it is a book well worth the reading.
