First off: before you get scared and run away because, like me, you don't like jazz or don't consider yourself a jazz fan, and think you will hate this, you can relax, take a deep breath, and stop right there. This is simply not the best jazz I've ever heard, but quite possibly the best music I've ever heard (yep, seriously). Being an electronic music fan for years, I give every notable thing a chance and try to delve into all corners of the many genres within genres that have surfaced over the years within electronic music. And am very glad I did when I came across this remarkable gem. For me, an instant classic. Combines warm piano (which on other records can bother me right there: piano being usually overdone and usually by mid-amateurs OR by virtuoso pianists that just can't write songs or melodies I actually want to listen to) mixed with sharp, tight, immediately and noticeably ground-breaking production...especially if you listen to countless "critically acclaimed" records day-in and day-out like I do which usually amount to crap. The only jazzy records I've ever been able to listen to over the years are by 1. Goblin (a 70's Italian prog-rock/Morricone-influenced soundtrack band that did scores for Dario Argento's horror films) that this sounds nothing like, 2. David Sylvian (originally from 80's synthpop band, Japan) and his album, "Secrets of the Beehive", while remarkable, sounds nothing like this and 3. B. Fleischmann's "Welcome Tourist", which is the closest thing I can compare this to. Songs like "02/00" and "Pass By" on Fleischmann's album have similarish piano textures and drum programming I just love, but where Fleischmann used drum & bass to startling effect, and acoustic guitars that might be tagged as folktronica, this record is something different. If you won't take my word for it and will impatiently only give one song a shot, listen to "Kammermusik". A track so warm and brilliant it brings tears to my eyes on every listen and for multiple reasons; a feeling of a great memory lost and now remembered, a journey somewhere you know you need to but are almost reluctant to go, and because of the sheer genius of the effect this music from it's makers has had on me. Hopefully and confidently, it will do the same for you.
