Product Description

Jazzwise, (Stuart Nicholson), July 2011

There is not one false move or miss-step in this gently understated yet subtly compelling music.

Advances in electronic and computer music have allowed a new flexibility and sophistication that is fully reflected here.

A real partnership, built on composition and free, danceable journeys into improv the two have been undertaking since 2009.

CD Description

'Duo' is an innovative collaboration between Bugge Wesseltoft, pianist, composer and pioneer of electronic jazz and Henrik Schwarz, one of the most sought after producers of dance music, who has remixed stars from Michael Jackson to James Brown. They effortlessly combine piano and electronics to make beautiful forward thinking music that will appeal to jazz and electronic music fans alike. Bugge explains the concept of the album: "This duo feels totally organic. We are creating music on the spot, both live and in the studio. With today's electronic tools you can really improvise with them, and Henrik is so clever with his stuff - he makes amazing music from scratch." The album's opener was the very first collaboration between the duo, totally improvised, and recorded in Berlin in 2009. The lines between live playing and live sampling blur, so it becomes impossible to tell which musician is responsible for any given sound you are hearing. !K7 Records recording artist Henrik Schwarz is a resident performer at Berlin's famous techno cathedral Berghain, he performs and DJs at major clubs Worldwide. Schwarz has remixed international pop stars like Michael Jackson, Boy George, James Brown, Ane Brun and Coldcut to name a few. He has released over 100 productions on labels such as Warner Music, Strictly Rhythm, Ninja Tune and Defected. Piano maestro and three time Grammy award winning Bugge Wesseltoft has recorded for labels such as ECM and Act and his own Jazzland Records, for which he pioneered the blend of electronics and jazz often labeled as 'Nu Jazz'. Wesseltoft has released 10 influential albums and has previously teamed up with producers Francois Kevorkian, Laurent Garnier and Joe Claussel.

Bugge boogies on 30 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
All the tracks on this album are enjoyable - interesting mix of keyboard and computer - but "Leave my head alone, brain" is a real groove, which demands to be listened to over and over!

REAL SOUL 13 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
For those who liked the "New Conception"New Conception of Jazz Boxalbums of a few years ago, this is a must,ok the lines of what is considered jazz are sometimes blurred, but who cares?
This is extraordinary music, thoughtfull electro with feeling and soul, but retaining an experimental side that is rarely performed with such panache.
Bugge Wesseltofts piano, has rarely sounded so good and Henrik SchwarzDJ KICKS SPECIAL: HENRIK SCHWARZ uses a subtle palate of electronics to entice the listener.
The packaging is simple but fun.
People who say that electronic based music has no soul should listen very carefully to this album.

Simply the best jazz album I've ever heard 15 Aug 2011
By Michael R. Ames - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First off: before you get scared and run away because, like me, you don't like jazz or don't consider yourself a jazz fan, and think you will hate this, you can relax, take a deep breath, and stop right there. This is simply not the best jazz I've ever heard, but quite possibly the best music I've ever heard (yep, seriously). Being an electronic music fan for years, I give every notable thing a chance and try to delve into all corners of the many genres within genres that have surfaced over the years within electronic music. And am very glad I did when I came across this remarkable gem. For me, an instant classic. Combines warm piano (which on other records can bother me right there: piano being usually overdone and usually by mid-amateurs OR by virtuoso pianists that just can't write songs or melodies I actually want to listen to) mixed with sharp, tight, immediately and noticeably ground-breaking production...especially if you listen to countless "critically acclaimed" records day-in and day-out like I do which usually amount to crap. The only jazzy records I've ever been able to listen to over the years are by 1. Goblin (a 70's Italian prog-rock/Morricone-influenced soundtrack band that did scores for Dario Argento's horror films) that this sounds nothing like, 2. David Sylvian (originally from 80's synthpop band, Japan) and his album, "Secrets of the Beehive", while remarkable, sounds nothing like this and 3. B. Fleischmann's "Welcome Tourist", which is the closest thing I can compare this to. Songs like "02/00" and "Pass By" on Fleischmann's album have similarish piano textures and drum programming I just love, but where Fleischmann used drum & bass to startling effect, and acoustic guitars that might be tagged as folktronica, this record is something different. If you won't take my word for it and will impatiently only give one song a shot, listen to "Kammermusik". A track so warm and brilliant it brings tears to my eyes on every listen and for multiple reasons; a feeling of a great memory lost and now remembered, a journey somewhere you know you need to but are almost reluctant to go, and because of the sheer genius of the effect this music from it's makers has had on me. Hopefully and confidently, it will do the same for you.
