4.0 out of 5 stars Build up a set of painted mianiatures quickly, 5 Nov 2003
By A Customer
One of my dilemmas when I returned to D&D after several years away was what to do for miniatures? All my old metal figures are rotting in a loft somewhere and I simply didn't have the time to replace them all and paint them. To be honest, there doesn't seem to be as good a selection of metal miniatures around these days anyway. So what to do?

These miniatures by Wizards of the Coast really fitted the bill for me. They're not as satisfying to handle as metal miniatures, and they're not painted as well as you'd like in an ideal world, but a really professional paint job would be prohibitively expensive. Besides, most of the appeal to me is building up a useful set of painted figures quickly for gaming rather than worrying about how good they look.

Some figures are better than others, but I'm not sure how much of that is down to personal preference. One thing I find frustrating is the random nature of the miniatures - you have no control over which ones you're buying. This makes it exciting when you open the box for the first time, but duplicates are inevitable. In some cases, such duplicates are useful (many monsters are encountered in groups), but others are a little frustrating. Also, it's very tough to collect an entire set due to the number of "rare" figures (there's only one in each box).

Minor gripes aside, these miniatures serve me very well and add a lot of fun and atmosphere to my group's games in the absence of painted metal alternatives. Can't wait for the next two boxes to arrive! Will I get that Fire Elemental I've been wanting........?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great variety for gaming, 1 Feb 2004
I didn't have any D&D miniatures so I read the reviews of both the Harbinger expansion pack and Miniature entry pack and decided to buy both.
They are smaller than I imagined but increadibly great quality pieces in design and paintwork.

I got the following miniatures in the Harbinger expansion pack :

Elf Archer
Elf Ranger
Human Wanderer
Azer Raider
Kobold Warrior
Wolf Skeleton
Kuo-Toa
Large Fire Elemental

Judging by the previous review I did ok.

I think I would go for this pack again over the entry pack because while you get extras in the entry pack for the same money you can get 2 Harbinger packs both cases get you 16 pieces but you'll get 2 rare pieces with the Harbingers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wizard release notes, 21 Feb 2004
Roll for initiative!

Prepare yourself for a random encounter with heroes, villains, and monsters for your Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Taken straight from the D&D rulebooks, these characters are ready for battle -- right out of the box.

Each Harbinger expansion pack contains 8 randomly selected, fully assembled, prepainted collectible miniatures with double-sided statistic cards for use with the D&D roleplaying game or for fast, head-to-head miniatures combat.

As for me I could not but enough of these before Amazon suddenly ran out of them, I am concidering ordering from america to ease my pain at not having a mind flayer.
