A good laugh 4 May 2010
Format:Paperback
There's something compelling about watching or listening to a person on a TV or radio quiz come unstuck. Who knows what stress contestants face when answering a simple(?) question, but going by the answers in this book, it must be a good deal. Answers that are simply wrong are not amusing, but when the brain goes into freespin and comes up with a truly ludicrous answer, the results can be hilarious. Most of the Q&As in this book fall into this category, but there are some where the lack of general knowledge displayed by contestants is frighteningly funny. Don't read this book on the bus or train: you'll get a lot of strange looks.

Unfortunately, if you read the excerpt in the paper, then you'd've seen the best ones already. Reading this from scratch is the best way to appreciate it. Some we didn't get, but that's only because even we didn't know the right answers but some were just so plain silly that anyone would laugh. Still laugh when I think of some lol.

I suppose it it traditional to make fun at others' expense and Private Eye is an expert at that. The book plumbs almost incredible depths of ignorance, but there are also one or two embarrassing, "I didn't know that either!" responses.

Reaction under pressure is not a reliable guide to ability or education, but it is amusing which is its point - just don't take it too seriously or expect too much. There's plenty of white paper for doodling and making your own comments.

A downstairs loo book.
