Review
'Fresh and frightening and highly recommended' (Observer )

'King has become such a sophisticated writer that this novel is never less than page-turning ... A first-class beach-read' (Independent on Sunday )

'Another masterpiece'

(The Sun )

'The true narrative artist is a rare creature. Storytelling - the ability to make the listener or the reader need to know, demand to know, what happens next - is a gift...Stephen King, like Charles Dickens before him, has this gift in spades.' (The Times on CELL )

Product Description
When Edgar Freemantle moves to Duma Key to escape his past, he doesn't expect to find much there. But Duma Key and its mysteries have been waiting for him. The shells beneath his house are whispering to him, and something in the view from his window urges him to discover a talent he never knew he had. Edgar Freemantle begins to paint. 3.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable but too long for it's own good, 17 Nov 2008
By S.G. (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I'm a S. King's fan and love his books (my favourite remains Bag of Bones) regardless of their length, but Duma Key is unecessarily long - at 3/4 it runs out of steam and at times I felt I was struggling to keep reading. He builds up the characters well throughout the book but in the end I didn't find myself very emotionally attached to any them, and after finishing it I put down the book with ease and some relief of getting to the end of it. In his recent interview about his upcoming novel "Under the Dome" (fall of 2009) he said it will be twice as long as Duma Key and I hope it will be much better too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too long, too messy..., 31 Dec 2008
By Mr. Tony Griffiths "Griff" (Wiltshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Another weighty King novel hits the bookshelves. But this offering, although delivering Kings quality of characters, yet again fails to deliver a meaningful and satisfying conclusion.

The first half of the book promises much, but wading through the remaining 350 pages or so is tiresome and tedious. The storyline becomes just messy, with events verging on the ridiculous. Whether King believes superfluous content and often cringeworthy dialogue is sufficient to satisy his many readers, I find increasingly doubtful.

I'm sure it will be another huge money-spinner for him. Unfortunately, I have called a halt to spending anymore time with him.

2.0 out of 5 stars Long, confusing and unexciting, 2 May 2009
This novel would benefit greatly from being reduced in length by half. It is so long and drawn out that it was a struggle to read.

The story is confusing and messy in places, most notably in describing exactly who or what Perse is. Having read the whole book, I still don't know for sure.

Stephen King has written excellent novels in his time, but this certainly isn't one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start but muddled ending
This book starts well and sets a great pace, but the ending felt unsure and rushed. It hints at themes mentioned in other King books but not to its detriment. Read more
