During the early `50s, Duke Ellington took the new medium of the album, and used it to re-imagine some of his earlier 3 minute singles as longer, more complex pieces, with an added layer of maturity. The three albums collected here are exemplars of this, and are chock full of classic up tempo swinging tunes, showing off the big band to its full potential, and showing how the Duke's musical vision had grown.
The three albums: Duke Ellington Presents, Ellington '55 and Historically Speaking, are spread across two discs, contained in a fold out jewel case. There is a booklet with all the original liner notes, track listings and personnel details. To my ears the recordings sound pretty good, and the music comes across clearly and brightly on my stereo. There is also half a disk of extra material, lifted from a previously unreleased recording session in 1953. No real surprises, but the music fits in very well with the rest of the material on the album.
Another excellent release from AVID, five stars all round.
