This concert, from 1959, is a real hidden treasure. There is so much to this album. The music is swingin and the sound quality is perfect. Duke interacts with the crowd a lot and it's really fun, especially turned up loud! Idiom 59 is huge and intricate and played with beautiful precision for a raucous out-door festival performance. Johnny Hodges plays Flirtybird, and its the best version ive heard of it. If, like me, you never had the privilege of seeing the band live, you must buy this album, you wont regret it.

This concert was, virtually, a relaunch of the Ellington band after a difficult time. Unfortunately, due to the absence of several key soloists, the band came off after a few numbers, only to reappear later, on top form. Due to faults in the original tape, the record company decided the tracks should be re-recorded in a studio several days later. Duke refused to re-record Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, as it was so special, but many other tracks were redone. So here we have the original concert tracks and the same tracks, redone in the studio. This is a pity, and takes the edge off the feeling of listening to the complete concert. However it was a memorable occasion, and this CD should be in any Ellington fans library
