It's very easy to forget Dukas' distinguished place among the French composers of his time (and he didn't help by tending to throw away so much of his output) but the earlyish symphony is a triumphantly enjoyable affair with a Beethovenian rigour. There's nothing vague here. La Peri I have seen described as a bore (probably by the same critic who though L'enfant et les sortileges scored the same way!) but it's a most attractive piece and far from being boring (shades of Balakirev's Tamar but more varied). Everyone knows the Sorcerer, of course, and it comes off just fine. Very good performances and splendid sound makes this CD a real winner. And it's hardly expensive!

While I bought this for THE SCORCERER'S APPRENTICE, I actually like the other pieces much better. Having never heard LE PERI, I now find it to be my favourite. The playing by this orchestra is superb and the engineering is top drawer. I would highly recommend this to anyone's CD collection, along with Elgar's SECOND SYMPHONY.

very good cd like the the sorcerers apprentice played it a christmas reminds me of fantasia where mickey mouse was dressed up as the sorcerers apprentice and put the broom to work good orchestas 5 star rating
