Biography

Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as ... Read more in Amazon's Frank Sinatra Store

A tremendous commercial success upon its release in 1993, this collection pairs Sinatra with various big name vocalists on 13 of his best-known classics. Unfortunately, it's also one of the least enjoyable records of Sinatra's career. Part of the problem is Phil Ramone's obtrusively slick production, but the fact that Sinatra's partners sang along to tapes of his already-recorded performances--rather than with the Chairman himself--really keeps Duets from ever catching fire. Tony Bennett turns in a predictably swell "New York, New York," but duets with Gloria Estefan ("Come Rain or Come Shine"), Kenny G ("All the Way/One More For My Baby") and U2's Bono ("I've Got You Under My Skin") unfortunately represent something of an artistic low-point for Sinatra. --Dan Epstein

It is striking that the "Duets" are the Frank Bestsellers albums. You can not explain this phenomenon. They are among the few of the hundreds who recorded that are not good. Frank's voice is hoarse, synchronization among peers is not good, anyway. You can not record a good album of Duets if interpreters are not together just because you lose the excitement or the feeling. Think and see these albums as tributes or curiosities. Nothing more.

I was given this CD as a leaving present. My co workers, knowing how I loved Mr. Sinatra, thought it would be a welcome addition to my vast collection of his music. Well,I was initially deeply touched by their kindness. Upon playing the CD,however,I became incensed. Not with them, but with the people who thought fit to put out such rubbish into the public domain.I didn't say anything to my ex colleagues, but took the CD into my local W.H.Smiths. I approached the lady behind the counter, and explained my predicament, viz, that I hated the CD and that I couldn't return it to the lovely people who had kindly given it to me.Not having a receipt,I was entirely in her hands.
The lady took it off me,smiled, and said,"You are right,it's dreadful,go and swap it for something else". Which I did.Kind, understanding lady.
There are SO many fantastic Sinatra CD's available,so this one is to be avoided.
One star from me,since I have to give at least one.

As a listener of every album and single Sinatra ever produced I would rate every one of them five stars, however Duets for me is an immense disappointment.

The first major issue with duets is that no dueting took placed. They used karaoke style pre recorded sounding backing tracks and then got each artist to sing their allocated vocals separately, then through the power of modern music technology, brought it all together. Aside this spoiling the entire notion of the album, at times the false sound shows horribly.

Vocally Sinatra is not in great voice, which is understand at his age of 77 years old. However Sinatra during this time wasn't unpleasant to listen to, even on albums such as "80th live" (a mixture of live recordings from the late 80's) Sinatra sounded strained, yet warm and rich. However this album does him no justice, and anyone who's knows Sinatra's style will know he liked working with live musicians, not pre recorded backings or vocals.

Next is the choice of people to duet with. Whilst all fine artists in their own right, they all seem out of their depth singing Jazz/Swing standards. In particular, hearing Bono trying to swing Cole porter make my skin literally cringe.

There is however one redeeming trait of this CD however, and it is the final song. It is primarily so good because it is just Sinatra on his own vocally. Kenny G offers a beautiful rendition of all the way and his subtle playing throughout one for my baby really lifts the arrangements. Sinatra's pained sound in his voice only ever improves the sound of classic saloon songs (as seen in "She Shot Me Down").

When I first heard this Album, it was by chance as I bought it for my mum. I played it(as I normally do when I buy c.d's for my mum to make sure it was ok. I first heard Luther Vandross with the Great Francis Albert, and though "wow, I like this" I listened on and I must admit that I actually liked every track on the CD! My all time favourite is the track with Anita Baker, WITCHCRAFT! I know all the words, and everyone that listens to this album, loves it. I have now purchases it for 3 of my friends, and we are all fairly young,30-37,The latest is a DJ friend of mine who loves this kindda music. No matter what age you are, this is bound to be a winner with all age groups. I am now going to buy the Duets volume 2! Thanks alot Kay.

His last really serious recordings having died I think about 6 years later. It's a must in the collection (I also have Duets 2) If you are a Sinatra fan this must be in your collection. Just to hear him singing with todays talent (ok 1992) it a shear pleasure. Excellent mix and serious stuff for the serious fan
