Amazon.co.uk Review

Before creating Duel in the Sun, legendary producer David O Selznick dreamed of making another magnum opus like his 1939 production of Gone with the Wind; he also proposed to make Jennifer Jones, his ladylove then second wife, a megastar. Thus Duel in the Sun (Lust in the Dust to some) was created as an extravagant Technicolor epic about the collision of the old West with the new, offering wide-open spaces with railroads and barbed wire, and juxtaposing character traits such as hot-blooded outlaws alongside civilised folk who are often wimpy or unwell. The film begins among giant rocks drenched in a blood-red sunset, with velvet-voiced Orson Welles intoning the legend of doomed Pearl Chavez and her demon lover; Duel in the Sun never strays far from lush romanticism, spiced with a dash of S/M. The cast is huge (a lubriciously wicked Gregory Peck, Lillian Gish, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Walter Huston, Harry Carey, Herbert Marshall, Charles Bickford, Butterfly McQueen) and there are unforgettable set pieces, the most notable being the lovers' final shootout among those red rocks, as orgiastic a finale as you could ask for. --Kathleen Murphy, Amazon.com

Antirealistic, flaming, passionate, overripe... these are some of the words that come to mind when speaking of this movie. David Selznick clearly wanted to repeat the success of "Gone with the wind" with another epic, sprawling movie... He failed, but this torrid western melodrama, so excessive that it sometimes reaches true camp, has achieved cult status. Not for everyone's tastes, but shot in exquisite Technicolor and made with great style and plenty of visual symbolism. A movie which defies the sense of ridicule, but which remains strong and vigorous even today!

Comentary to Lawyeraau Words !

3 Stars for a 5 Star Western is very poor. The Cast, the player, the Camera, the light
Jennifer Jones are all great.

If a person give this Western only 3 Stars mark it would be the same you said Vicent Van Gogh
or Rembrand are worse Painter.

Movies like this are timeless. Such Story, Act and director are absolut brilliant.

I watches at least 3000 or 4000 movies. Most of them were Classics.
If i sent to a lonly Island and could 20 movies
bring on this Island to stay for 2 Years on it Duell in the Sun was one of it.
Others would be great funny Movies like Pillow Talk with Doris Day or the wonderful light
Sunday in New York with Jane Fonda and Rod Taylor.

For all New Viewers Great to look and very good for alltime looking.
Its absolutly timless as Portrait of Jenny. A Milestone !!!!

DUEL IN THE SUN,1946,Technicolor,stars the lovely JENNIFER JONES,with JOSEPH COTTON, GREGORY PECK,
LIONEL BARRYMORE, LILLIAN GISH, WALTER HUSTON, CHARLES BICKFORD.
An absolutely brilliant western melodrama, extremely well acted by the entire cast, and gloriously
shot, with one hell of a fantastic finale, the woman/man shootout "duel in the desert" style between,
Pearl Chavez[Jennifer Jones]and Lewt McCanles[Gregory Peck]. The now famous "gun duel" takes place amongst
a high rocky outcrop. And it is certainly one of the greatest of ALL western duels ever filmed.
Pearl Chavez[J.Jones]is a half-breed woman, who immediately causes friction between the McCanles family,
in particular between the two brothers, the good,Jesse[J.Cotton]and the bad,Lewt[G.Peck],Pearl herself
does not help matters by flirting with both brothers, which leads the brothers into a jealous rage with
each other. But the real nastiness comes out in the bad brother,Lewt, and as the eventual "duel in the desert"
shootout between Pearl and Lewt, they both realise, too late, that they really did indeed love one another.
"DUEL IN THE SUN" is a truly wonderful western melodrama, but what a classic five star plus of an ending. Brilliant.
Regards,Bill.
