A rather jarring mix of period drama, trashy romance and all-star blockbuster, Duel of Hearts is a swashbuckling, bodice-ripping tale of slightly dubious quality. Based on a novel by Barbara Cartland, it provides the usual dollops of intrigue and love, although its choice of a female protagonist does at least give it some twist. The splendidly named Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody) is the story's plucky heroine, fighting to prove the innocence of her beau Lord Vane Brecon and discover his troubling inner turmoil.
Donning a disguise that seems to consist largely of wearing her hair in a different manner, Lady Caroline places herself among the very people that would seek Brecon's undoing. Those looking for high quality drama should probably go elsewhere, but this is an entertaining enough piece of silliness, combining the history of Regency England with the production values of a daytime American soap opera.
On the DVD: Duel of Hearts on DVD has had very little effort put into it, which is perhaps no surprise given the rather slapdash nature of the main feature. The sound has been digitally remastered but the picture quality hasn't, and has that dubious made-for-television look. The interactive menu is unattractive and unimaginative and there are no extras. --Phil Udell

One of four big pictures made intended to re-create the Gainsborough era of British movie-making. These were made at the end of the 80s. Successfully done with tremendous productions using lavish sets and costumes. Some of the greatest names in modern British cinema starred.
'Duel of Hearts' is based on a great novel by the one and only queen of romance Barbara Cartland, but there's enough dramatic plots here to appeal to everyone! Stars; Geraldine Chaplin, Richard Johnson, Virginia McKenna, Beryl Reid, Billie Whitelaw and a very dishy Tom Adams! (one could be forgiven for thinking it is Alexandra Bastedo of 'The Champions' in the leading role - but it is in fact Alison Doody!)
The making of these four great pictures (the other three being: 'The Ghost in Monte Carlo', 'A Hazard of Hearts' and 'The Lady and the Highwayman' - all these big pictures are extremely hard to come by now) were what made Lew Grade my hero! If only we had someone else to continue his great work of bringing these Gainsborough-style pictures back to the cinema of today...

Duel of hearts DVD, a very entertaining and interesting DVD if you are looking for a romantic story with some adventure. It is surprising that the DVD is a promotional one which comes free with the Daily Mail newspaper, as I thought that it was not Amazons' policy to sell promotional items.

I suppose I am rather biased as my son had a part in this film, but it is a good period drama, based on a book by Barbara Cartland, very regal, worth snuggling up on a miserable day with a duvet, worth watching
