Strange, but I have an early memory of watching this film on TV when I was 7 years old (1978) - it was absolutely enthralling and back then I was in awe of this movie - better than Star Wars! 20 years later this movie still has all it's potency intact. The fact that Spielberg can make an hour and a half movie solely about a truck and a car, and make it such compulsive viewing is a testimony to his great ability. Obviously it's easier to impress a 7 year old than a 28 year old in terms of film magnificence - this film has stood the test of time. The only thing I wondered was how the hell that truck could steam up those hills so quickly at the end (turbodiesel?); but seriously this film is a classic, sadly overlooked.

I first saw this film almost 20 years ago and it's so good that here I am searching for it on DVD. This film has basically two ingredients: Dennis Weaver who is brilliant as the mild mannered travelling salesman and a big American truck that tries to kill him. That's pretty much all there is to it which makes this film all the more remarkable as it'll have you glued for the entire 90 minutes. I guarantee you won't want to miss a second of it. If you've not seen this film yet - see it now, it's a masterpiece of film-making!

Duel (1971) is a horror, thriller movie made for TV by Steven Spielberg (Jaws); it was later released as a theatrical version. The film is based on a short story of the same name by novelist Richard Matheson (I Am Legend).

David Mann (Dennis Weaver) is a salesman on his way home to his wife. He is driving a long stretch of Californian desert highway when he comes across a filthy Peterbilt petrol tanker spewing fumes out of its exhaust and lumbering slowly, well below the speed limit. Mann tries to past the truck a few times and continue on his journey, but throughout the film the truck plays dangerous cat-and-mouse games with the little red car. The film concludes in a showdown between the two vehicles.

Duel was the second film by Spielberg (he had previously directed TV episodes such as Columbo and Night Gallery) and is adapted by Matheson from his short story which was originally published in Playboy magazine. He would later adapt Peter Benchley's novel, Jaws (1975), which is a similar film to Duel in many ways, especially the main antagonist; instead of a rogue truck there is a rogue shark. This DVD is the Special Edition by Universal Studios and has a running time of 90 minutes; it is Region 1 NTSC USA/CAN and has English Language with French and Spanish subtitles. There is an identical Region 2 PAL version. The extra features include:

*Spielberg on Making Duel
*Spielberg and the Small Screen
*Richard Matheson: The Writing of Duel
*Photograph Gallery
*Trailer
*Production Notes
*Cast & Filmmakers Bios

*Region 1 has the Red Cover & Region 2 has the Black Cover; A lot of people keep ordering the wrong regions on here, so hopefully this will be of help.

Like most reviewers I saw this film at an early age being told it was a car chase movie so I watched it for fun. I never forgot the film and made my parents shell out their cash for it at the age of 7. It instantly became my favourite film for many years and continues to run most others close. The fact that even by the end of this film, every viewer finds them selves praying for Weaver's survival, even though we know nothing of this mans background or even his reasons for travelling across the back of beyond is true testament to the power of the film. Here a relatively simple story line is turned into a twisting double helix of a film that will never leave my memory as probably one of the finest films I have ever seen. This honestly makes most of Spielberg's other productions look like kids movies.

This movie was made as an ABC "movie of the week" and was movie directorial debut of Steven Spielberg. He had just finished the first Colombo episode and this was his chance to direct a movie. He had ten days, yet it took thirteen, too film this movie and did it all on location. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat yet keep you entertained. Dennis Weaver stars as a man who ends up being harassed and placed in dangerous situations by a truck driver. The co-star of this movie is the old Peterbilt truck that is the antagonist. This is an excellent movie of suspense reminiscent of a Hitchcock film. A fantastic first movie and another great acting job by Mr. Weaver.

The Special features of this collector's edition include the making of the movie with Steven Spielberg, the author speaking about the writing of the short story and script and Spielberg's other work on television. Plus the standard trailer, gallery, production notes and biographies of cast and of the filmmakers.

What a film! I so remember the first time I saw this Spielberg gem, and it blew me away!
A simple, simple plot but directed with genius to ensure the viewer is puzzled, horrified and hanging on the edge of their seat wondering what is coming next. And the point is the circumstances are such that we can imagine ourselves in Dennis Weavers predicament...what to do for the best...why is this guy after me...will he stop...can I get away from him?
Just a brilliant, brilliant film...one of my very favourites as you may have already gleaned...and it marked Speilberg in my mind as a director to watch for in the future. And he has not done too badly since has he!
I envy anyone who has not as yet caught this film...you are in for a rare treat. Yep, the film is ancient now, and is very seventies in many ways. But do not let this put you off one iota. And now it is in Blu-ray you lucky things.
Highest possible recommendation....basically, just buy it!
