This guide to Dudley has been devised by artist Gerard Mermoz and produced by MADE*, the architecture centre for the West Midlands region. Gerard was invited to create a map working with local people. The aim was to rediscover the town, not from a typical historical or tourist perspective, but from an alternative, and distinctly local viewpoint. As part of MADE* s programme to examine ideas around Sense of Place and Local Distinctiveness, we asked an artist to develop a guide that examined the specific and the distinctive aspects of Dudley as defined by locals. On a rainy Sunday afternoon on 24th June 2007, local people joined Gerard and Architect, Alun Nicholas on a walk with no map, just a simple rule that the walkers should lead the guiders. This inverse relationship and subsequent ramble around Dudley informed the route for a journey around the town which resulted in this guide; an artist s interpretation of a journey.
