In a word, beautiful. Whimsical, haunting, amusing and incredibly touching in its simplicity. I agree it needs to be handled carefully with younger ones, but this book is almost zenish in its matter of fact treatment of death as a part of life. My five year old is already asking about death, and when the time is right I think this story would be a great way of broaching the subject. Kids are wiser than we think, and I have a feeling the only ones who would be 'creeped out' by this book are adults for whom talking about death has become a taboo, as it often does as we grow. I think everyone can learn from this story no matter how old they are.
