Product Description

Daniel, Duke of Stratton, learns of his betrothal to Miss Berengaria Evangeline Winchcomb minutes before his father’s death. Having gambled his fortune away, all the late Duke had left to sell was his son. To save his family’s honor Daniel agrees to the marriage, but society’s favorite bachelor is no longer a charming easygoing man - his father’s betrayal has left him angry and with a thirst for revenge.
Eva learns she is to wed the Duke of Stratton on the way to the church. Inside she feels a flicker of hope that at last she is to leave her horrid family - however that flicker is short-lived as she faces the cold unyielding man who is now her husband.
Has she merely replaced one tyrant with another?

Winner: Romance Writers of New Zealand Clendon Award for a full-length romantic manuscript.

More About the Author

Wendy Vella is a lover of all things romantic. She started reading her first Georgette Heyer book at a young age and instantly fell in love with the Regency era.

Writing is something she has always found time for; she penned her first novel at eighteen though she says it will never make an appearance further than the closet in which it currently resides.

Her Clendon and Readers Choice award-winning historical romance The Reluctant Countess debuted with Random House in their Loveswept line.

Wendy is married to her own dark brooding hero and shares her home with two wonderful children, two dogs and anyone else who happens to be visiting at the time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding 13 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a really silly, weak book. It is full of inconsistencies which indicate bad editing (Stratton Hall became Lodge, the name of heroine's friend changes from Belmont to Belton etc.). The hero and heroine are shot at and almost killed in their carriage but the hero is too busy going fencing to listen to his wife when she wishes to tell him something. Even in a regency novel - where one suspends belief-- this one was really ridiculous. Also, loads of little mistakes about London and period society. So I really don't understand the strong reviews. The author may admire Georgette Heyer books but she is not there yet!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 26 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The characters were fine, writing was okay, and I was happy to read it. But when characters insist on making STUPID decisions, mostly to do with lack of communication, it drives me nuts. It's so romance-by-numbers, it's incredibly frustrating, especially as you know exactly how the rest of the story is going to play out the second the stupidity occurs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Appalling 5 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Historically inaccurate, ignorant of conventions, manners and society of the time. Implausible, and plot holes aplenty.
Has some redeeming moments of humour and humanity, but any book which can't decide if one of the characters surnames is "Belmont" or "Belton" is a great annoyance.
The essential plot is not new, but could have been treated much better. This author did not do it justice.
Very sloppy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet family romance. 18 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The title and summary was interesting enough to buy. However I found the characters somewhat weak and a very complaisant heroine.Too much for that period. The plot is good but too descriptive and predictable. I gave up halfway through. More passion and moving conversation is needed in historical. Although we all like happy endings yes but not from the begining.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay read 25 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book sweet. I liked Eva and felt for her but did not really like the hero, although he became very sweet towards her! However, I found this book very similar to another I read before (Kiss of a Stranger - which I have also reviewed on).

The dialogue is too contemporary for my taste and lets the book down. I just wish that authors basing their books on the regency era should use the language as it was spoken then. Simply adding words like "ton", on-dit" etc is NOT enough to transport one in situ. It could have been so much better if this was tackled.

Overall though I loved reading about the changing Eva. The hero's realisation that she was beautiful was not well explained but wasn't too bad. I guess I was expecting a stronger reaction since I like mush!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet 22 Sep 2013

I found it hard to completely lose myself in this book. At times it was very genuine and believable but then the language would become a bit stilted and cliched. Not terrible but not brilliant either.

I had to force myself to put it down. Such a great story with full characters with faults and realistic issues. No epilogue thought but even without the end was lovely.

This story is rather depressing in the beginning and unfortunately one knows how things are going to evolve. I will finish it eventually.
