This slim volume contains many photographs of Dublin, accompanied by historical information on the city and on many of the buildings that are photographed.

Do not be put off by the photo of the ha'penny bridge on the front of the dust jacket - most of the photos in the back rise above this level of cliché, as evidenced by the fine photo of Trinity College on the back of the dust jacket.

The text would be of interest both to Dubliners and visitors to the city and contains many snippets of information (I, for one, did not know that the garden behind Iveagh House is open to the public).

The photographs are of high quality in terms of both composition and reproduction; the photographer has taken full advantage of the wonderful morning and evening light and in many cases has used unusually creative perspectives. In most cases, the dreaded converging verticals have been avoided or corrected. No technical detail of camera settings used is included, but this will not deter photographers from drawing inspiration from the photographs.

In summary, this book will be of interest both to photographers and tourists. I give it four stars instead of five only because of a number of irritating typographical errors (Arthur Griffith, not Arthur Griffiths ...).

Having visited Dublin for a surprise Birthday party I wanted to buy the birthday boy something as a reminder. This fits the bill exactly and I cannot believe it was not for sale at the airport instead of a load of political litertaure. An ideal book to buy before or after you travel.

Hope the city does the book justice! 30 April 2008

Well, I have been purchasing a bunch of things prior to my upcoming summer vacation to Ireland (most of which are from Amazon!). I bought this book, mainly because it was just released and I thought it would give me the most recent view of the city. Not knowing exactly what to expect, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This is a beautiful book, something you would be proud to display on a coffee table. With beautiful, colorful pictures of the city I felt that as a foreigner someone was actually holding my hand and leading me around the city and sharing the most beautiful sought after areas. Not only does the author show pictures of the outside of many landmarks, the pictures inside the buildings are just as spectacular, showing many hidden treasures. Interdisbursed between the pictures are historic tidbits which left me craving for more. I learned a lot about this beautiful city of my ancestors and I can honestly say that I can't wait to go now and see it in person. When I return, I will spend hours reading this book again to see the places I visited. I loved this book and highly recommend it to everyone!
