5.0 out of 5 stars More! I want more! 9 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Colin Bateman is rapidly becoming a national icon. No one writes with such sharp, satirical wit. Here we have 5 consummate short stories in just 69 pages by a man who says he doesn't like writing the things! As someone else said in another review, the stories are all the stuff of urban legends, but don't let that put you off: the tales are all great fun, but its the telling of them that makes Bateman's stories unique. I will read these stories again and again. Each one is a minor masterpiece. If you enjoy Irish satire carved out with a wit that is not only razor sharp, but double-sided, buy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad - certainly short 24 Oct. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this thinking it would be a handy, bite-sized way to consume Bateman, who I have recently discovered and like a lot.

The stories are nice, and some interesting ideas, but in the short story format I sense a dilemma - develop the characters and ideas, or just get to the point.

I guess I'm not a fan of the short story format - but if you are - it's fine.

And yes - Mrs Greary's leather trousers was already in a book I'd read before. It does work well as a stand-alone piece though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bateman, as usual. brilliant 31 May 2014

After having read all but one of his novels - late I agree, and sometimes out of sequence, this short stories group is great to introduce the wit and dark side and observation of a brilliant wordsmith.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit lightweight 25 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought there'd be more stories. Interesting to see how some of the ideas came out later in Mystery Man, Starkey etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dublin express 16 April 2014

Two very good short stories at the beginning of the book. Bateman should defiantly write more short stories even if they are annoying to write.
