Product Description

From the Back Cover

A stirring tale encompassing tradition, identity, and faith, Dubai Wives takes the reader into a hidden world behind the walls of lavish mansions and into the desperate back alleys of Dubai; from the hills of Morocco to the gloomy English countryside and from the slums of India to the glittering lights of the Burj Al Arab. Dubai Wives reveals a city where no one is who they seem to be... and where everything is possible.

Format: Paperback
Dubai Wives is a fast-paced novel, teeming with clashes and betrayal, colourful descriptions of fashion shows are juxtaposed against dingy nightclubs and the abuse of young women. With a murder embedded in the story line, there are echoes of Grisham and Desperate Housewives as well as more recently Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger. The result is a tale of vengeance and action, at times shocking and at times humorous but often sweet as the smell of the shisha which pervades its settings.
The author's greatest strength lies in showcasing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the city. There is Jewel in her Swarovski embroidered abaya humiliated by her husband's infidelity, the Romanian Liliana dancing in a seedy nightclub, Cora the Filipino maid desperate to rid herself of an unwanted pregnancy and plain English Jane whose Dubai make-over includes plastic surgery and belly dancing lessons as she relentlessly pursues a transformation into glamour.
The text could have benefited with more editorial input to trim down some of the repetitions and excesses but, still, Dubai Wives is an entertaining, thrilling read; a page-turner written with an astute cultural knowledge and saturated with a genuine love for this surprising city.

The book was an OK read but didn't keep me captivated, especially as I think it could have been based anywhere. There wasn't that much detail about Dubai itself, so the story could have taken place in any city. That for me was a let down, as I bought the book to get a better insight into the culture of Dubai.
The women in the book are mostly ex pats and the book tells about what is happening to each one in their life at the time. One woman is a dancer in a seedy club. One is having an affair and another has a husband who is having an affair. Its not very exciting with hardly any cultural references.

This book isn't what I thought it was going to be. I felt that it jumped around a little too much.
