This is one of the top world music albums that I have heard in a long time ... there are so many `world fusion' projects out there and so many of them fall short of the mark... Dub Qawwali has most definitely exceeded expectation for me... not only is it musically beautiful but also original in it's combining of old and new, east and west, sacred and secular... not a project to be undertaken by the faint hearted but an album that can be enjoyed by anyone.

To make this album Gaudi was given access to rare and unreleased vocal recordings of `The Emperor of Qawwali' Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from the 60's and 70's by Khan's former record label Rehmat Gramophone. With them he has created, in my opinion, something really very special. What struck me first about this production is the seamless integration of old vocals and brand new musical composition... it sounds as if the tracks were voiced yesterday by Nusrat specifically for the project, not 35 years ago on the other side of the world for another purpose. This for me is a testament not only to Gaudi's skill as a producer but also to his musical sensitivity and respect for the work of this great Qawwal.

Sceptics of this project needn't be... what may be required is a little lateral thinking ... the spiritual cultures of Sufism and Rastafarianism may not immediately seem to be natural partners, most obviously in the musical manifestation of their beliefs... however at closer inspection I believe there is a strong commonality..
...The reaching of spiritual highs and ecstatic states through musical expressions of peace, love, tolerance and the celebration of a greater guiding force is most certainly common to both ...even if the tempo and instrumentation is different... To explore this in music is not only courageous but requires a sensitivity and respect for both cultures that I believe is 100% present in Dub Qawwali.

I've always loved good downtempo music, but too many artists rely on the same jazzy noodlings: Dub Qawwali is just the shot in the arm the 'scene' needs: simply put it's AMAZING! INCREDIBLE! Believe me, there aren't enough superlatives to convey how fantastic this cd is, and I haven't been so excited by a piece of music in years. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's vocals and the dub rhythms have been blended together perfectly, to create a downtempo masterpiece which I certainly rate as the album of the year. Don't be put off by the 'world music' tag...If you like acts such as Kruder & Dorfmeister, Peace Orchestra or Thievery Corporation you'll love Dub Qawwali.

This production, this whole thing is unlike any other production i have ever listened to. It takes me to places where no other album can take me. I'm normally a lover of Jamaican dub & reggae but this album 'Dub Qawwali' , whilst having that dub themed edge throughout with bass lines that drive this forward & keep it deep & mellow, is in a different league all of its own. I just can't imagine another production album sounding like this, ever !
It's so good that i consciously try to not play it too often for fear of tiring of it.... Although i don't really believe i ever will.

Of all the albums i have bought in the last decade, nothing can touch this as a production in its own entire corner. I've been listening to it for as long as it has been released & it still awakens a unique feeling & vibe which wraps me up & takes me on a kind of spiritual journey before its sweet ending where it just gently drops me off again. Listening to it evokes something deep inside me & i only ever play it when i can afford the time to listen to it right through. I'll even go so far as to say that when i listen to it, it keeps me on the brink of tears. I mean like a full on lump in the throat-gonna spill any moment kind of joy ! Just stunning all over & i love it.

If you're not too macho to get in touch with some inner emotion, what good music is written for right ! then this is i highly recommend & it lives on the top of every pile of music i own.

It's dubby, ethnic, emotional, spiritual, irie, bassy, deep, provocative, addictive, unique & clever as hell. The production quality is perfect.

Other than that i can only say good things about this album but there are no words to fully express my feelings for this one.....

.......Love perhaps !

I heard a radio programme about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan recently and thought his voice was really something. Peter Gabriel has worked with him on the soundtrack of The Last Temptation of Christ and said what a massive fan he is of this guy. I had never heard of him. This Cd is also dedicated to Sufism, which is a part of Islam I have been interested in for some time. Not because I am into any particular religion, nor want to be, but because of their mindset; they meditate and seek to transcend to higher states of consciousness with God. They also believe that all paths lead to God, and that we should all accept, not just be tolerant of other religions. That we should love every other human being, and every component of creation as they are all aspects of God.

Anyway, sorry to go on so long about that, but it was because of this interest in such a good concept of living, coupled with his voice (of such soaring vocals), that made me buy the cd. It is really quite beautiful to listen to and for me a spiritual experience.

I listen to a wide variety of music, but sometimes you just want something a little bit different, soothing, inspiring and spiritually uplifting. This is what this cd does for me. Since I bought it, I am hooked. I listen to it most days and it is fantastic. It is a cross between reggae and a type of mystical meditation music, hope that describes it for you. You won't be disappointed.

Apparently after he died, his wife was left with a collection of songs which she thought would never be heard and approached Gaudi and asked him to add backing track to Nusrat's music. Don't let this worry you and think that it was a load of dregs off the cutting room floor, no this was really inspired work.
