Cloak and Dagger is the first set and was recorded by Perry prior to establishing his fabled Black Ark studio. It's a powerful record using heavy bass and drum tracks to back Perry's trademark wizardry. The drum and bass creates a hypnotic groove that allows the listener to relax and soak up the experience.
The second disc contains the other two albums: Blackboard Jungle Dub and Revolution Dub. Both of these provide the listener with similar heavy dub reggae.
Highlights include the use of Wailers tracks like Keep on Moving (Moving Skank) and Kaya (Kaya Skank) as well as another version of Cloak and Dagger from the first album in the set.
Revolutions samples seventies sitcom Doctor in the House on Doctor on the Go. The sound of this album is darker and harder.
All three albums are rich with ideas and sound totally fresh today. This release is important as it sees the first proper UK release of Blackboard Jungle. .
The discovery of these three excellent albums has fired up my interest in reggae in general and dub in particular.
This excellent reissue through Trojan/Sanctuary collects the two 1973 albums 'Cloak & Dagger' by Lee Perry & The Upsetters featuring Tommy McCook and 'Black Board Jungle Dub' by Upsetters 14 Dub with 1975's 'Revolution Dub' by Lee Perry & the Upsetters. The 38 tracks present are all fantastic and the defintion of dub - music that demands to be played extremely loud on a stereo to appreciate the sonic power and complex productions Perry employed. There are multiple 'versions' here of tracks, which like the 'versions' apparent on 'Arkology' show an alternate angle to Perry's multi-dimensional thing (both Massive Attack & Primal Scream's dub-albums owe much to these records). 'Revolution Dub' employs samples of British TV, while several tracks on 'Black Board Jungle Dub' mesh with Perry's prior work with the Wailers. This collection of once rare Perry albums is extremely good value, is compulsive listening on its own, and could provide samples for dance music for decades to come. Like Sly & the Family Stone's 'Time', Perry's pioneering work ultimately lives in a time of its own...
