Product Description

Review

This dual-language anthology will reward anyone who loves verse. --The Scotsman

Generous references to an authorititive bibliography encourage readers to explore the linguistic, cultural and textual backgrounds of poem after poem. --Scottish Studies Review

Product Description

This anthology spans almost a thousand years of Gaelic verse, bringing together for the first time the poetry from the millennium c.600-1600 AD, when Scotland shared its rich culture with Ireland. It includes a huge range of rich and diverse poetry: prayers and hymns of Iona, lays of Finn, praise poems and satires from the drinking halls of chiefs, courtly songs and lewd rants from the aristocracy, songs of battle and death, poems of love, and incantations. All poems appear with facing-page translations which capture the spirit and beauty of the originals, and each poem is accompanied by critical information about the piece itself, the poet and the historical context of his/her work. The entire collection is prefaced by a comprehensive introduction which includes a history of Gaeldom and the Gaelic language in Scotland, as well as an analysis of the role and functions of poetry in Gaelic society.

A great collection 18 Aug 2010
By Wizbit
Format:Paperback
I was given this book as a gift for starting an MLitt in Celtic Studies. I admit I was dubious that I would use it but I will say right here and now that not only has it been invaluable, the poetry is beautiful to just sit and read. The book is written so that each poem has an introduction in both Gaelic and in English. The introductions and then at the back the notes section are invaluable if you want more information about the poets and the period of composition. I love this book so much that I read it over and over. It's great for people who have no Gaelic, it's good for learners and brilliant for the Gaelic fluents out there. If you love poetry and you have an interest in Gaelic history or even Celtic literature, get this book.
