Utterly exquisite 9 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album is nothing less than superb. I purchased it based on Ms. Gerrard's work in the Gladiator soundtrack, and I was not disappointed. "The Unfolding" made me go weak at the knees; the mystery of "The Pilgrimage of Lost Children" hinted at the existence of some other world; the mournfulness of the vocals in "Sacrifice" brought a lump to my throat. By dispensing with lyrics in favour of "ideal" phonemes, Lisa Gerrard frees herself to fully explore the emotive qualities of sound, and touches something primeval and fundamentally human within us.

I've had this album since it was released, being a big Gerrard/DCD fan, but it's been stuck on my shelf for a good while.

I dug it out with Mirror Pool (Needed to hear Sanvean again... it's on the UK Immunisation advert) and was surprised at myself for forgetting what a strong album it is.

It's much better than Mirror Pool in consistancy, and although it doesn't have anything as beautiful as Sanvean ( One of my favourite tracks ever ), it still manages to move me.

Although Gerrard doesn't often sing in English, her voice portrays emotion more than any other vocalist I've heard.

She's been compared with the Cocteau Twins vocalist, Fraser, but I think this does Gerrard a great injustice who's voice, although not traditional for a female vocalist, is much more powerful and distinctive.

Everyone who reviews this always picks up on Sacrifice, but it's no surprise when it's such a strong track. The Human Game is the most easily accessible track on the album for first time listeners and i'm surprised not to have heard it on an TV programme in the UK who always dig out Gerrard/DCD for those harrowing or spooky cemetry moments.

Admittedly, this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's not dance/chart friendly ( for that look towards Delerium who have sampled Persian Love Song from Mirror Pool on their album Karma ) in the slightest and it's definitely one of those albums that is incredibly reflective and will be a cult classic for those in know for years to come. What the industry term as a slow burner I believe.

Simply Splendid! 11 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
'Duality' is Lisa Gerrard at her hypnotic best. Richer in sound than either 'The Insider' or the 'Gladiator' soundtrack, and more powerful than anything Dead Can Dance ever produced, this album has a trance-like quality that draws the listener in and makes him/her want to hear it again and again. This is particularly true for track no. 7, 'The Human Game,' which mixes children's cries, a James Bond-like tune and a hypnotic instrumental refrain, and track no. 9, the unearthly 'Sacrifice,' which is nothing short of haunting. It isn't the happiest music, but if you're into strong melodies with a slightly Eastern whiff, this is it. Stunning.
