We bought this toaster in Autumn 2005 to match the Dualit kettle (shortly before that failed and was replaced) since we thought with the Dualit name we would have something that would last. It worked fine but the control was poor in that a tiny difference in setting between the 1 and 2 marks resulted in untoasted bread or burnt-to-a-cinder toast. Last month (May 2007) it sent out a spectacular spark as the bread was lowered and expired. We sent it to the Dualit Service Centre for repair (as stated in the instructions). The reply came that they would not replace it (being more than a year old) and "We are unable to repair this model of toaster due to its construction". They offered a 25% discount on a new model. With our usage, and including the cost of sending it back to Dualit, it cost us 10 pence per slice of toast. But that is not the entire issue. A toaster sold by a retailer in 2005 cannot be repaired in 2007 due to failure of a simple circuit board! Is there any surprise, with manufacturers of this business ethic, that our landfill sites are filled faster than necessary? Our expensive but smart toaster is literally garbage after 18 months of light use. Would we buy anything made by Dualit again? After our experence of this and the matching kettle - No - not even if they were the last manufacturer of kitchen equipment left on the planet.

A million thanks to the first reviewer here who has just saved me from sending my toaster off for an apparently impossible repair. I bought this because I loved the style and colour and I wanted a good toaster and it was Dualit which I thoughy would go on for ever with the occaisional new element. For about 18 months it's made OK toast. Not brilliantly, and the adjustment was always hit and miss.
Today there was a loud pop and a flash as it heated up, it blew the fuse for all my sockets and is now history- the shortest lived toaster I've ever had. I went full of confidence to the Dualit website to order spares- but not for this model. I think as Dualit's reputation is built on longevity it should clearly label products designed for short life- I feel let down.

Well I bought mine over 2 years ago, and its still works well, still looks great, doesn't get too hot because of the cream soft touch exterior. And it never fails to amuse how the toast pops up with such gusto you sometimes need a net to catch it! My dogs wait in eagerness to see if a piece will land in their mouth. In all seriousness, that would be my only gripe, but I do tend to toast weight watchers bread which weighs next to nothing and I suspect this has a fair amount to do with it. As I say, I have had no problems with it, it toasts evenly and is certainly the nicest toaster I've ever had, and probably lasted longer too.
