Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Dualit Vario toaster makes great toast, looks stunning and is built to last. This four-slice model has a classic stainless steel finish. The slots are 28 mm wide with self-adjusting wire guards to automatically accommodate a broad range of bread thicknesses. The slots also support the separately available sandwich cage, which is a useful addition for making toasted sandwiches, buns and crumpets, though it is possible to toast the latter without a cage.

The Dualit is a sturdy beast with a retro look. It weighs in at around 4.25 kg and has minimal controls, all with a reassuringly solid feel. The red backlit slot selector switch lights up to tell you when the toaster is in use and can be set for two or four slices. This is important, as the toaster uses a patented ProHeat element that is optimised to quickly produce evenly cooked toast. However, the element's lifespan may be shortened if a slot is regularly heated while empty. A black rotary time switch means that you need to determine how long you want to toast each and every time you use the Dualit, rather than relying on a default setting as seen with other toasters.

One of the advantages of the Dualit toaster is that the bread doesn't pop up when the timer is finished. Instead, you need to press down the central black ejector knob to remove your toast. This ensures that your toast stays warm for longer if you are not there to remove it straightaway. Another component of note is a useful slide-out crumb tray. Results are impressive, with beautifully even toasting in all slots and up to 130 slices per hour (four medium slices from cold takes around two minutes). However, the most compelling reason for putting a Dualit toaster in your kitchen is its perfect blend of durability and style. --Heather Wilson

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Toaster 24 April 2003
Colour Name:Stainless Steel
After buying many cheaper toasters we decided to see if the Dualit was really worth the money.
And yes, it is, every penny.
Its simple timer mechanism means YOU decide how you want your toast, bagels, crumpets, rolls, toasted sandwiches etc etc.
Works perfectly with frozen bread, for thicker slices you can even heat them up a bit, then leave them in the warm toaster for a while for the centre to defrost, then heat again to finish them off to perfection.
It's the only toaster we found that can cope with odd shaped slices of bread made in our bread machine without jamming up and burning them.
The build quality is robust and this is the only domestic appliance we own that we could actually repair ourselves. You can order spare parts so this toaster really might last for ever!
And it's made in the UK.....

3.0 out of 5 stars A Slice of Nostalgia 1 Sep 2007
By H.Hogg
Colour Name:Cream
Do you like Aga's, flagstone floors and Golden Retrievers? Do you remember when summers were hot and winters cold? When you could go out with a quid in your pocket, have a good evening and still come home with ten bob change? Well then this may be just the toaster for you. Robust, traditional and evocative of a simpler age.

The trouble with nostalgia though, is that it comes with its built-in trash filter, something that makes you forget all the not-so-good aspects of things past. Like the fact that, however cute they were, a lot of things back then didn't actually work very well. TV pictures (black and white) ghosted in and out of focus, cars invariably broke down on the family holiday, and if you went anywhere on the weekend, well it was shut.

This item is similar. It looks great, but ask it to do its basic job, expecting in return a uniform, golden slice, and you'll be disappointed. Truth is, you'd be better off throwing the bread up into the air, while your other half tries to incinerate it on the way down with a blowlamp.

In other words, the output is a tad variable. Heat distribution internally is poor, with the result that, no matter how you play with the clockwork (no really, it is) timer, one side will always come out more done than the other. Even on the same side, one part can be almost black while the rest is as white as, well, untoasted bread, really. Thin bread is better than thick (walk away after inserting thick bread and you'll be able to communicate your annoyance to the manufacturers by smoke signals).

However, all is not bad news. For a start, Dualit obviously have a sense of humour, something that is clear by the price.

Colour Name:Stainless Steel|Verified Purchase
Fed up with having to change my toaster just after the warranty expires, I bought the Dualit from Amazon in 2004 (3.5 years ago) so this is a long term review. I thought that as long as parts remain available it would last a lifetime and I'd be dumping less landfill. I was attracted by its great looks and reputation. However, the performance is quite average.

Pros
+ Looks and feels great

Cons
- About ten times more expensive than a 'cheap' toaster.

- It doesn't cope well with non-standard size slices and as I make my own bread the slices often poke over the top and so taller slices may have an untoasted end.

- Bread is unevenly toasted.

- The time needed to toast a slice of bread depends on type of bread (white toasts faster) and how fresh it is. As the timing duration relies on a timer and not a sensor, it's dependent on your judgement, so rather hit or miss. Difficult to explain when mother in law visits!

- Mine is the four slice toaster. I can select whether to heat two or four elements, but heating an odd number of slices is a waste of energy in the unused slot. I suggest a four way switch be incorporated in future models.

- The clockwork timer failed after 3 years of daily use - There are many reports of failing timers on the internet so it seems to be common. More importantly THIS IS A FIRE RISK as the Dualit just carries on toasting. It really is poor design as it should have been fail-safe. Dualit charge around 25 for a self-fit timer including delivery but kindly agreed to send one out free of charge as a 'one off' which was great news and prompted me to up my rating from two to three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best toaster since the toasting fork! 12 July 2012
By Jackson
Colour Name:Stainless Steel
I am a retired Electrical Engineer. I was a Senior Electrical Engineer Officer in the Merchant Navy working for P&O when it was the greatest shipping company in world.
Johns Law. This is my law which says that 'The number of breakdowns is directly proportional to the number of operators' On a ship many of the crew & officers use the toasters so they get well used so breakdowns are inevitable but the great thing about Dualit toasters are that they are robust and so easy to repair, Changing an element takes about 5 minutes as does changing a Timer, More advantages, No Electronics to go wrong, No automatic Pop up mechanism to fail, It is all just simple robust engineering that can be relied on for many years, I scrapped many items while at sea but I never scrapped a Dualit toaster.
