If you are thinking of buying this toaster, you will no doubt be doing a deal of soul-searching as I did. You'll canvass opinions, seek out on-line reviews and generally find ways of justifying what does seem an awful lot of money on a toaster! Well, je ne regrette rien!
The build quality is superb and you know from the feel that you will have years of trouble-free service from this little beauty. It has the quality feel you would expect and it blows inferior brands clean out of the water. It's like the difference between driving a clapped-out Ford Fiesta and taking the wheel in a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
Supremely easy to use, there are no pop-up gimmicks, no snarled-up pieces of toast sliced too generously to fit in the slot and you cannot begin to put a price on the smug expression you'll adopt when making your breakfast! As for the toast, well fruited teacakes are our weakness and they come out well-browned on the 2 minute setting with the inside light and fluffy, not all dried-out and semi cremated as with this machine's predecessor.
Grit your teeth, pay the money, and enjoy the Rolls Royce of the toaster world! You'll not regret it.

    UPDATE June 2015

Now almost 6 years on from when I made my original purchase, this Dualit toaster continues to provide service, used almost every day and making excellent toast, with no further faults since my 2011 update.

    UPDATE November 2011

2 years and 3 months after I bought my toaster, It has had its first repair, to replace one of the toasting elements. It is disappointing that the element failed so soon after Dualit's 2 year warranty on the elements expired. On the plus side, the replacement element was less than the price of the cheapest toaster, arrived within a week of me placing the order for it, and took no more than half-an-hour to fit. The instructions provided by Dualit with the element were sufficient and clear. Some of the nuts and bolts were difficult to get at, but still a relatively easy task for someone with some electrical competence. Definitely more complex than wiring a 13 amp plug, but not greatly so.

And after one week having to use my old 'normal' toaster, it's very nice to have the Dualit operational again. The ability to slightly raise the toast and have a peek at a corner to see how it's doing, was something I greatly missed.

The original timer on my Dualit is still functioning fine with no problems, despite almost daily use.

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I've had this toaster for almost a week and am very impressed so far. Although it's clearly far too early for me to know whether it'll last long enough for the very high price to be worthwhile, my initial experience has been good.

Having read the many varying reviews already for Dualit toasters, e.g. for

Wonderfully stylish and yet simplicity itself is a virtue that Dualit have captured so well. With the onset of computers it is nice to have a no fuss toaster, especially first thing in the morning when your brain is a little sluggish. The toast stays warm in the body of the taoster once the timer is switched off, so there is no need to run and butter it. One draw back is the size. If you have limited space, check the dimensions. Amazon beat all other websites on price and speed of delivery. Ours arrived in 4 days!!

It looks great and I think toasts fine (and unlike some comments I've seen we think the slots are wide enough for thick sliced toast.) but after 2 years the timer has given out and given the cost of the product I would expect it to last longer as we don't even use it every day!
The cost to replace the timer part is also more than I would expect (£26) and you need to fit it yourself. All in all we're debating just buying a new toaster - and it wont be a Dualit!

Decided to spend an extra few pounds to get a well build toaster - Since I really appreciate the build quality of a product.

When it arrived I was pleased to see the build quality matched the earlier versions I've seen in different households.

    How does it toast?
Well I'm not British and therefore my toasting manner may differ from the intended use, I use it to toast everything from Ciabatta to Rye bread mostly uneven hand cut pieces, this is no challenge for the toaster as long as you are aware of the limited width of the slots.

Toasting bread in this device gives you quite an unique ability to create a golden crust still keeping the middle soft and moist, I simply love it.

If anything needs to be critiqued I would argue for the quality of the selector and timer knob, they don't feel as good as the rest of the machine - but still consistent and easy to use.

    Cheers!

We bought this three slot version to replace an old Kenwood that had served us for about eight years before its elements gave up the ghost. We believed the positive review, ignored the other warnings about Dualit, got sucked in by all the stuff about "icons", and dived in at great cost. It has turned out to be an expensive disappointment. Well made it is, good looking it is, but efficient it most certainly is not. The slots, at 28mm are just a fraction too narrow for two slices of normal bread (if you like single sided toast). So you use the sandwich frame thing but the toast still bulges out of the side and catches on the guards at the side of the slot. The browning is not even (as claimed) but very uneven and the slots are just a fraction too shallow for a slice of normal bread (so the top gets left un-toasted) and also not wide enough for the toast to be placed in the other way. Somehow the Dualit people have got the shape of modern British loaves wrong! In the old Kenwood (cost £18) we could toast just about anything but the Dualit's slots are too narrow for teacakes and buns. And to top it all, lightly toasting smaller things like a crumpet or a square waffle is impossible because they a) cannot be ejected high enough by the silly manual lever (which acts on one side only meaning that an attempt to eject a crumpet results in it rolling down the arm to lodge just as deep in the slot as it was when it was toasting), and b) get caught in between the ejector finger and the side of the slot - thereby making a nasty burned mess. If you are looking for a designer toaster to look good in the kitchen and need to do no more than toast smallish square slices of bread then this is great. But for real world toasting it is ineffective, inefficient and cheekily expensive.
