As an avid (now fuming) former Gaggia user - machine broke down after 2 years - I wanted to choose a stylish new machine to replace. Style is important and the cheap ones look rubbish. The black Espressivo is a sexy machine so already plus points.
On the positive side it produces fantastic espresso with little effort. I have a dualit burr grinder so never use ready ground coffee. Trusting those using the machine understand ready ground is grains of a generic size so never made just for high-pressure machines, so you'll never get a good coffee from ready ground.
Unlike the Gaggia, the Dualit doesn't need 30lb of pressure to obtain a good crema, just a light tap. I've timed the shots and can get a good double in the regulation 25 seconds.
Milk is not slow to froth as some have said, it's quicker than my pre-Gaggia machine. The rubber thing is a throwaway item so take it off and just use the metal steam wand. If you get rubbish froth, go on the web and find out how to do it. It's all about the microbubbles and there's an art to it.
The fact that the machine has a thermobloc is a big plus. The Gaggia had to depressurise and heat up between coffee and milk which meant extra waiting time just to do the milk. No issues like this here, you can warm the milk as soon as you've pulled your espresso shot.
Hardened coffee enthusiasts are used to leaving the machine to heat up. Personally I'd NEVER run water through the machine. Just leave the handle in place and heat a cup on the top for a few mins, or put hot water in a cup then dry it. Espresso hitting a cold cup is bad news.
The water resrvoir is big and easy to access (another problem on the Gaggias).
It's not perfect, it's rather noisy and suffers from cup-shake as some other cheap (ie light) models do. I just hold the cup or put a piece of kitchen roll under the cup. And the steam wans without the rubber thing is a bit short and slightly flimsy, but still does a pretty good job.
That said, its deserves its recommendation in a certain 'consumer' magazine and at the end of the day, the important thing is a tasty espresso and this one so far certainly delivers.
