Sorry Gold Blend. Never again!,

This review is from: Dualit 84009 Chrome Espresso Coffee Maker (Kitchen & Home)
I used to own a Morphy Richards cheap and cheerful espresso maker. I got about four disgusting espressos out of it which I tried to pretend I was enjoying, then it broke.Several years on, I love my Starbucks, so wanted to try again. I wanted a decent machine that made good coffee, a good name and a good design. I've got the toaster, so I bought Dualit. The coffee is outstanding, the milk frother easy to use (1 minute in the microwave first to warm it makes life easier) and although it takes about 4 minutes start to finish, the satisfaction of drinking the coffee you have created makes it all worthwhile. It does take 'pods' which are pre-packed single doses of espresso - like a tea-bag for coffee machines. They do weigh in at 30 pence per cup vs 10 pence for ground coffee, but the time from turning on the machine to drinking coffee is less than a minute, which is faster than boiling a kettle for instant coffee. Unlike the Nespresso brand, the dualit uses a different system called ESE, and you can buy the pods at most supermarkets. Should you spend £260 pounds on a coffee maker? Well, firstly, it's a dualit. I took the top off to peek at its insides and it is typical dualit. Simple, sturdy, and will probably outlive my internal pipework! I cannot see this breaking. Secondly, look at the picture. Classic, simple and functional. Lastly, the coffee it produces is a world away from the 'other end' of the market. I've been there, trust me! And if you consider how many people spend £140 on a dualit toaster every week.........

Great buy,

Like others I bought a cheap espresso maker a few years ago. It was a complete waste of money. It was hardly ever used as the end results were disgusting and it couldn't froth milk.Several years on I decided to give it another go and bought this Dualit machine. What a fantastic bit of kit. Looks great and easy to use. Espressos are first rate and I managed to make perfect cappucino first time as the frother works really well. Do buy good quality coffee - it makes a real difference and I much preferred the results to that using the auto-pods that you can also use. If you buy beans you need a burr grinder not the blade type you see in most places. I struggled to find one but tracked one down in Starbucks in the end. Use semi-skinned milk but for best results. Worth the money? Definitely. Pay more for a machine that works to avoid disappointment.

Very poor,

As the proud owner of a classic Dualit toaster I expected the same combination of design and quality from the Expresso machine. Sadly, not so. The basic design is flawed, especially the need to hold one control for several seconds to get the steam wand up to temperature. I contacted Duralit about this and they referred it to their design people - a couple of years on and there's no sign of a redesign. It's really disappointing that I can't recomend this product.
