Chris Pureka is a total unknown who's name I stumbled across in an atricle online. She sounded promising so I had a listen to some of her stuff on youtube and decided it was worth investing £7 to download this album in order to find out more. I have not regretted it for a single moment.
The music is very guitar led, which I love, and is used to convey both faster/cheerful tunes and deeper emotional ones. I would not label this as folk music but more of a fusion of folk and country music.
Two tracks definitely worth investing in are 'These pages' and '31 and falling' as they have beautiful lyrics and accompanying music. Certainly the ones I listen to the most though there isn't a song on the album that I avoid.

Wonderful Artist 1 May 2009
By Nobody's Business - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I first learned about Chris Pureka when she played at a local club. The opening act was a competent folk singer with some promise, the kind of act you'd expect to see in a good nightclub with a $10 cover.

Then Chris Pureka came out, looking like a stiff breeze might knock her over. But as she started into her first song, her guitar and her haunting voice penetrated the farthest corners of the room. I knew we were in the presence of a true talent.

I've long been a fan of the so-called grass-roots acoustic movement that spawned performers like Shawn Colvin, Patti Larkin, Christine Lavin, John Gorka and David Wilcox. If Chris Pureka represents the next generation of acoustic artists, then I think this corner of the folk world has a bright future.

Amazing, Incredible! 13 Dec 2006

I was so impressed wtih Pureka's first album that I could not have imagined that any CD would ever be as good as Driving North. But Dryland is just as good, if not better. Her lyrics are beautiful and musically, it is magnificent. I gaurantee, that you will not be able to take this CD out of the CD player!

Some of the most beautiful and haunting songs you will ever hear 30 Sep 2012

There are happy songs here, but most are sad and they are amazingly powerful. Buy it , you will listen to it over and over! The poetic lyrics of "so it goes" contain so much elegance and longing and despair that it might have been written by Leonard Cohen . Truly, a masterpiece album. Gives you chills and then somehow makes you feel reborn.

Stunningly Good !!! 19 Feb 2007

Heard the 4th track from Paste Magazine#28 and just knew I wanted to hear more.....so, I downloaded this CD off of iTunes because I couldn't wait. As to the quality of the songs on this cd...I'd compare them to the best of Lucinda Williams. Chris's voice is incredible. You won't be sorry giving this one a listen.
