Product Description

This, our latest edition revised by master craftsman Sean Adcock, gives detailed but clear advice on all aspects of the walling craft. We believe this is the most comprehensive book available on the building of dry stone walls and other structures. Dry stone walling is one of the most ancient building techniques, used worldwide where stone outcrops at the earths surface. Britain's varied geology has produced a wide range of building styles, which demonstrates the wallers' skill in making the best use of the locally available stone. 159 Pages 391 Illustrations

5.0 out of 5 stars The "must have" guide for wallers. 19 Dec 2006
I bought this guide on the recommendation of a Master Craftsman, when I took up walling recently. It is an excellent manual with clear illustrations showing both best practice and the pitfalls to avoid. It goes from basics right through to advanced features and covers the range of British walling styles. A brilliant book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! 26 July 2008

This is not only well written, well illustrated and throughly researched, it's also well-thought out as a robust ring-bound book for being dumped on the ground, covered in muck as you work.

As practical guidebooks go, it's got to be near-perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rural wall building 2 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase
Excellent book if you want to build dry stone walls in your area. Easy to follow, sensible practical instructions which match the real world with an awareness of regional differences in available materials. Building walls of natural stone in your area would not, for instance, work if you were following advice from a one-size-fits-all manual. Round boulders, for example, have a different technique to flat square type stone. A really useful manual written by people who have obviously acquired their skills through practical hands-on experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars very comprehensive book 24 Mar 2011
Just the kinda book i needed, as it shows so many different ways to approach wall building. Something for everybody and for every type of stone. The most useful information I found were the illustrations of what not to do, and why, with certain shaped stones.....this has saved me a LOT of trouble, as I'm learning from scratch. The book is beautifully laid out, with very clear illustrations. Another plus is - that it has a flexible and well protected cover and is bound in such a way that means you can have it with you on-site, without it getting ruined. The whole thing is really well thought out, which is unusual, thank you and well done to who ever put it all together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dry Stone Walling: A Practical Handbook 24 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase
I did a beginners course in Dry Stone Walling about 5 years ago down in Dorset and within 2 years somehow I became its Chairman. Right I thought, it's now time I sat down and filled in those gaps in my dry stone walling knowledge and so I ordered this book. It does what it says on the front cover - it is a practical handbook and a dam good one at that. A great buy, a good read and a great source of information.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good insight 12 July 2011

Not a bad book overall. It outlines the techniques of building and different wall types quite nicely as well as giving guidelines for group working. It doesn't cover hammer and chisel work adequately, but then again, there is no substitute for experience and hands on guidance for cutting running snecks as the techniques vary from stone type to stone type.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is the one 9 Jan 2010
I think this book is the best straightforward and comprehensive guide on to how to build dry stone walls in the UK.

It has understandable explanations and illustrative diagrams

It is the standard text for most walling courses and is theoretically sound:- i.e. It follows the best accepted practices

If there is one book you should buy to understand walling it is this one.

None of us love the binding - spiral means it does not last forever - so it will not last in the outside for long

I recently found this book was one of a series (which includes hedgelaying and other things) - which bodes well for those of us who appreciate rural skills

I commend this text to you all as an inspiration for your work
