“In the early seventies I found myself preferring film soundtracks to most other types of records. What drew me to them was their sensuality and unfinished-ness - in the absence of the film they invited you, the listener, to complete them in your mind. If you hadn't even seen the film, the music remained evocative - like the lingering perfume of somebody who's just left a room ... Read more in Amazon's Brian Eno Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Hybrid 22 Aug 2011
By Christopher Hunter VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I have to admit to being slightly underwhelmed by the previous 'Milk Sea' release. I just didn't connect with it. This is much more interesting and involving. Firstly, there is some real atmosphere here and secondly the word content is the area pushing the boundary rather than the music which is unusual in Eno releases. The long review futher down says a lot more but I have to say that the comparables that sprang at me on first listening are Stephen Jones/Babybird lo-fi recordings, Eno's track 'Bone Bomb' and some of his work from 'Nerve net'. I'm enjoying the record a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars From The Bush Of Ghosts To A Theatre Of Voices 3 July 2011
By song_x
Format:MP3 Download

From early on, Brian Eno has been quite sceptical about words, their meanings, their ability to distract our attention from sound. So, although having written outstanding, at times surreal lyrics for his brilliant four song albums in the seventies ("Here Come The Warm Jets", "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)", "Another Green World" (this perfect mélange of songs and purely atmospheric pieces) and "Before and After Science"), he had never added the lyrics.

Now, on this new, astonishing album, the poems are printed. An interesting problem for the master of Ambient Music: poems consist of a highly condensed language, everything within a poem requires careful attention, every syllable, every space between lines, every picture, every breath words take. Eno's trick: everything becomes sound; the listener decides for himself where to move, foreground, background, wordwise, soundwise. The music offers a broad spectrum: funky passages, trash jazz, exotica a la Eno, post-Kraut-electronics and drifting-spheres, soulful chamber music. Inspired stuff.

In an interview, Rick Holland told me: "Each track was approached as a unique organism, and there were nearly fifty pieces when we first sat down to finish the record. I do offer musical ideas and also extremely vague and over-reaching requests, Can you make this part sound more like primordial sludge Brian?', that kind of thing. Of course his answers tend to be, `Yes, yes I can.'."

And, yep, he can! Poems and music - a special affair! "Drums Between The Bells" will speak, with an open heart, to people who look for vital music they have never heard before, and to those who are curious about a still quite living thing called modern poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars strands coming together 6 July 2011
By Angus
Format:Audio CD
I'm listening to the track The Real (on a stationary train). A drifting essence of some parts of Apollo, a woman speaking close to the the microphone, some occasional distortion. Crisp yet textured.

The most obvious reference from recent work is the last track on Another Day on Earth, Bone Bomb. If you like that then this may well be a good purchase.

I'm reminded of Lou Reed's The Raven, and of the Blue Notebooks by Max Richter where Tilda Swinton reads some passages. On Drums between Bells there is a strong sense of the space between each word. I read that Brian Eno used people with voices he liked to read the words of Rick Holland (who I was unaware of). Sometime his Polish book keeper, and other people from his immediate community.

There is a funkiness that crops up here and there which has a trace of Nerve Net and Spinner.

For me this is a more exciting piece than Brian Eno's last album Craft on a Milk Sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wordless Perfect 15 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
It's worth getting the two-disc version for the instrumental CD. The words are O.K. but spoken not sung as such. This album works better for me as an instrumental and is better than Small Craft On A Milk Sea, which itself is great.

2.0 out of 5 stars Irritated by it 12 Aug 2011
By C. Owen
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sorry folks but I think the reviews so far are less than entirely helpful. Inspiration is pretty thin on the ground here, by Eno's standards. An earlier reviewer mentioned the purely instrumental versions that are available in the 2-CD package, suggesting they were preferable. I haven't heard these, but he probably has a point. I found myself wishing the words away, whilst quite liking some of the music behind.
