What I wouldn't have given for a product like this when I was young!!! All it takes is a digital camera of some kind (any kind), a computer and this kit, and suddenly you're making a movie.
I recently gave it to my ten year old nephew and he has been obsessed with it for the last three days solid. It is an ingenious product, beautifully packaged and containing everything needed to create home-made animations. The degree of quality in the finished animations is entirely dependent upon the age, skill and patience of the user. Children with a creative urge will definitely love it. The box contains armatures which are the skeletons on which you build your character, and provide joints so that the arms, wrists and head are all supported and can move realistically. These armatures are essential as plasticine models have a tendency to fall apart very easily if they don't have this sub-structure.
The pack also contains a beautifully illustrated little booklet that takes the novice through all the necessary steps of animation, right up to the finished product that can then be loaded onto the internet if desired. There is also a link to free software to actually make the animation with.
Why it has taken so long for this idea to arrive in toy shops I don't know.

This product has gripped the whole family with animation-fever! It does exactly what it says - enables you to make animated movies in minutes. Even our eight year-old has been able to use it with minimal assistance.
My criticisms are quite minor - firstly, the tripod is a bit flimsy and doesn't work at all if your camera's tripod socket is not positioned centrally. Secondly, the plastic figures provided are a bit flimsy - we had to superglue the arm of one of them, and the plasticine tends to weigh them down so they don't stay up or outstretched. Finally, the plasticine provided isn't huge in quantity, and the colours easily get mixed up however careful you are. We had to purchase more almost straight away, and it isn't easy to buy in any great quantity unless you want to buy bright primary colours - flesh tones are hard to come by.
It's worth being aware what you're actually purchasing. The product makes it clear that you need to have a PC and a digital camera. It doesn't provide you with any kind of software beyond a demo disk with downloadable sound effects. It assumes you have Windows Movie Maker (and most people have). Therefore, most people will find they have 95% of the things needed to make one of these movies without buying 'Animatazz'. That makes it seem a bit overpriced, but it's worth bearing in mind that the step by step instructions are very very useful if you haven't used Movie Maker before.
Also bear in mind if you have a modern PC with Windows 7 on it, you will not have Movie Maker loaded on but Movie Maker Live, which is a watered down version and the step by step instructions contained in Animatazz will not apply. You can download Movie Maker 2.6 for free. I have not visited the Animatazz website as yet, and this issue may be dealt with on there, but best to be advised in advance.

This is a fun and engaging toy - yes you can build small plaster-cine models and animate them. The results are fun and the process is engaging and creative. But you don't get 'software' you have to use Microsoft movie maker or similar and it is a faff if not already loaded on your machine. It isn't hard to use but this is not a plug and play system.
We used the toy with the provided creative materials but then got our own play-dough and built our own backgrounds and had a wail of a time. We are lucky to have a camcorder with a stop-motion function but using a standard digital camera works just as well.
I do think this is overpriced given you don't get a piece of software to assist in the creation process - but if you involve yourself it is a lot of fun.

Fab!
My 9 year old got this for his birthday, and loved it! Kept him busy for days! Could do with having a bit more plasticine in it, but you can buy extra quite cheaply elsewhere!
